Road Trip and Bike Event

Hello FOGBEES, We will be hosting the 2013/2014/2015 USA Cycling Men’s and Women’s Road and Time Trial Championships on Memorial Day weekend starting next year.

The TT is set for Saturday, and the Road Race and Hand-Cycling Championships are on Monday.  We are looking to connect with local clubs who might be interested in hosting a century style ride on the Sunday of that weekend beginning in neighboring cities and arriving in Chattanooga that day.  Enjoy downtown on Sunday night, watch the race on Sunday, and we will arrange transportation back to your start point on Monday evening.

Since this worked on a smaller scale for ProWalk/ProBike, I thought perhaps this might develop into an annual and event and even could be a fundraiser for the local organizations that coordinate on the way in. Thoughts?

City Receives Awards

Friday's (9/28) Hendersonville Star News, page 3A reports that Hendersonville received three awards from the Greater Nashville Regional Council on Sept 13'th.  One was for the implementation of the Bike/Ped Plan to include the greenway and another for the use of grants to improve its multi-modal transportation system (think Bike/Ped).  Several FOGBEE members participated in the writing of those plans.  The bottom-line for these awards are we CAN make a difference for getting involved in community work.  FOGBEES have also been central to the establishment of Bike Walk Tennessee, a 501c3 non-profit corporation to advocate statewide.  What is unfortunate is no FOGBEES are stepping up to replace these people as they retire from such work.

Mid Atlantic 12/24 Time Trial

The Fogbee jerseys were seen once again at an Ultra Marathon event. With a super flat course I was hoping for a PR this time. Alas it was not to be. The winds picked up and since the rules allowed no drafting we pushed all day long. Then near the finish of our 5th lap, I was nearly clipped by a car on a four lane highway (2 foot shoulder) and Jennifer was closely passed while in the turning lane. It was getting dark and we decided discretion was much better than being road carnage and we packed it in. Just weren't feeling the love from the local motorists. We both completed 127 miles. The plus side is we were able to sit back and scarf some pizza that Marilynn brought in and watch the more intrepid prepare all their lights and reflecties for the night. Since we didn't stick it out, we decided to form a subsegment of the UMCA, the Ultra Marathon Cycling Dilletantes.

Ultacyclists strike again

The Fogbees want to congratulate our very own Tom and alumni Jennifer for completing another ultracycling event.  While technically in the "battered and bruised" category, our riders fought the wind to finish a double-metric before darkness and less-than-ideal traffic made it time to call it a night.  Way to go!

"Hell Hath No Fury . . ."

. . Like a woman cheated out of her 2 for 1 margaritas.  Yes, Janice found her coupon that said Dos Margaritas IN GALLATIN had 2 for 1 margaritas on Saturday!
. . On a lighter side, what's in this picture?  For the answer CLICK HERE to see slide show from the great Turtle Ride yesterday (9/22) courtesy of Fogbee FACEBOOK editor-in-chief, Janice.
. . Next Saturday, we join the BRASS Ride for the 30-miler (approx).  CLICK HERE for online registration. Usually they have great T-shirts (for those that arrive early), but like the margaritas at Dos Margaritas, I have learned never promise anything not in your direct control.

FOGBEES Accused of Being Federal Agents

. . As reported in the Delina Daily News, "They coasted into Delina around 10:30am and they looked beat. Four big old looking guys clad in skin-tight brightly adorned spandex jerseys. Naturally everyone was suspicious. They called themselves Fat Old Guys on Bikes (FOGBEES was on their shirts)."
. . "Duh, we weren’t born yesterday," Larry Payne, editor of the Delina Daily News, said. "Following extensive research we discovered the unlikely visitors were really from the Federal Office of Geriatric Backwoods Economic Exploitation (FOGBEE) and they were here to help us (ha ha!)."

Tennessee Crossroads Comments on Cullman Ride

Subject: Tennessee Crossroads

Barb, Thanks for sharing the pictures. I did take a look at just a few of them.  It is pretty amazing for those ‘young’ guys to make that trip. How many miles did they ride? From one of the picture I saw, I think they went on into Alabama. But where is the church located, at the very end of the pictures?
And under small world’s, we are re-running the Delina Mkt. next week on Sept 27 & 30th. Plus in their travels, if they come across a place that they think we should profile..tell them to send me some information about the place. Again, thanks for the pictures.

Remembering a road

This summer with the Fogbees has truly been awesome!  As a transplant to the area, I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful group of people in the area :)  Reminiscent about rides this summer, I am trying to remember a road that Miley led a ride on a couple months ago.  It was stinkin' hot and Miley, Jay, Bob Huss and I did the long route while the other riders did short.  It ended with margaritas, so that means it left from White House.  I also remember Bob taking a wrong turn and encountering some dogs, then Miley went back to rescue him from the beasts.  Unfortunately, that is about all I remember, except for loving a long stretch of road with some rolling hills.  If anyone can help me out with identifying cede road, please do! I would like to keep it in my "back pocket" of routes.

We've Come a LONG Way

. . The third question on the League of Women Voters questions to Hendersonville’s mayoral candidates is “What will you do to maintain and expand Hendersonville’s green space and greenways?
. . The answer to this question and other questions submitted to State and US legislative candidates and to Hendersonville’s aldermen and mayoral  candidates will be published on September 15’th on Vote411.org.  It reminds me of another often repeated quote, “You’ve come a long way baby!

Cystic Fibrosis Ride

Last year Phil Vickery put together his rest stop for Cystic Fibrosis for Gabrielle a member of his family.  He put together this video.  He is not sure if Gabrielle will be able to attend this year, but Tiffany sent us a links to an article that appeared in the Hendersonville Standard and Gallatin News which will give everyone an idea as to what this disease is all about.
