Museeuw Bikes introduces flax-reinforced bicycle

Belgium-based Museeuw Bikes has combined carbon fiber and flax in its new MF-5 frame; the company says the flax helps mitigate microshocks and increases rider comfort.

The European Confederation of Flax and Hemp and Masters of Linen (both based in Paris, France) announced on March 3 that bicycle manufacturer Museeuw Bikes (Lokeren, Belgium) has introduced what is said to be the first bicycle frame made with a hybrid weave consisting of carbon fibers interwoven with natural flax fibers. Museeuw says flax content of the frames is 80 percent.

Unidirectional flax and carbon are applied layer by layer and used in the three main tubes of the MF-5 frame, the fork and in the rear-stays. Museeuw Bikes reports that the shock-absorbing properties of flax fibers offer several advantages to the cyclist; in particular, the flax fiber absorbs microshocks more effectively than competing composite frames, boosting rider comfort.

Museeuw reportedly considering use of flax in other bicycle components that are subject to vibration and shocks.

AASHTO Withdraws Recommendation

Thanks to the thousands who contacted the director of their state transportation agency regarding last week’s action alert the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has withdrawn their recommendation to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to weaken the requirements for states to give “due consideration” to the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians when constructing roadways. The League of American Bicyclists, the National Center for Biking and Walking, and America Bikes will be meeting with AASHTO officials next month to discuss this and other important issues.

October 1 - 2, 2011 MS Jack 'n' Back

David Miley and I are currently registered on Team FOGBEES for the Multiple Sclerosis to Jack and Back fundraiser ride. David has a nice campsite picked out on the hill @ Motlow State Community College. I on the other hand have made my reservation @ the Quality Inn / Executive Inn in Tullahoma for my overnight stay. When I checked three days ago there were about 10 non-smoking rooms available in the Quality Inn ( the new motel ). Phone 931-455-4501 to get the Quality Inn. Be sure to ask for the discounted rate for Jack and Back participants ( 98.99 plus tax ) per manager Rakeesh.

So-o-o-o, let's rally the troops and start getting psyched for another great run to Jack 'n' Back for a great cause, Multiple Sclerosis.

Pedals & Paws Ride -- Well Done

Hey Curtis, Tell mom she did a great job on this ride.  For her first event she certainly had some expert advice and did right! The police protection was exceptional.  You didn't need to mark the route.  Every intersection had police directing traffic.  On part of the ride they even followed along behind us on the shoulder with blue lights flashing. No ride I have been on has ever had high level of support.  I hope y'all made some money on the event because it was a great value for the bicyclists with shirts, hand-outs, rest stops, etc.

FOGBEES do Nashville Greenway

Fifteen FOGBEES sought a cure for "spring fever" as they serpentined their way through the back streets of Nashville to hit the greenway trailhead @ Metro Center along the Cumberland River. The tail winds which whisped us through Shelby bottoms and on to Percy Priest Dam became our lament as we bowed our way up Demonbreum Street seeking respite @ the Blackstone Brewery. Thanks to Mike Knake for posting and hosting this perennial fav ride. Definitely a 5 Star day ride. And thanks to everyone who rode and looked out for one another. GO FOGBEES !
