Fogbee bike stickers

I had a request to post the link for the stickers some of the Fogbees had made in the past. The link below is the company website with the Fogbee & TN flag on the label, just an example of what you can choose.

You can be as creative as you want in creating the look you desire. Play with different fonts, colors, etc.

FOGBEE Tailgate . Thanks Mike, Sherry, Bill and Janice!

Another great tailgate and turnout with the FOGBEES. Special thanks to Janice Camplin for the use of her home (and the warm showers after a chilly wet ride). Bill Barton for the fantastic "TailgateNashville" trailer, Mike Knake for the route, getting all the burgers, brats and grilling, and Sherry Knake for ensuring everything went smooth and making sure Mike didn't forget anything. Fun Fun Day! If you missed it we hope you can make the next one.

Averaging 240km a day for 26 days, Phil and Ben traverse both the unforgiving mountains of the Pyrenees and the Alps, on original vintage steel racing bikes with no gears and marginal brakes.

The Amazing Way Bicycles Change You

Been to Amsterdam and heard the story of how mothers changed the culture for bicycles. Hendersonville residents crab about traffic.  I know how they can fix the problem. Takes more than talk or synchronizing traffic lights.

New pizza place opening in White House

I saw the item below on FB and since the Fogbees visit the one in Gallatin often I thought this might be of interest to us. Having another choice in White House can't be a bad thing. Opens this winter but perhaps a good gathering place for Saturday rides when weather allows.

Hey White House! Just wanted to let everyone know that myself and Spencer, owners of Prince Street Pizza and Pub are moving forward with our location in White House at 2404 Hwy 31W!! We have been back and forth with the name of the place. To stick with the street theme I thought "31 W Pizza and Pub" but we thought that made it sound kinda more like a bar, so as of now it is "White House Pizza and Pub". It will be the same logo just imagine Prince Street being replaces and the street signs changing. Lets hear your thoughts!

P.S.  As of now we are shooting for a December opening. If you know someone interested in a job please tell them to come fill out an application at Prince Street Pizza in Gallatin.

Memphis

In 2008, Bicycling magazine called out Memphis Tennessee as one of the three worst cities in which to bicycle.  It repeated that report in its April 30, 2010, issue saying,
No bike lanes exist within the city limits of Memphis. And the city government, comprised of layers of bureaucracy, has repeatedly ignored or rejected requests from bike clubs, shops and other organizations to create facilities.”
However, in June 2017 the FOGBEE Bicycle Club chose Memphis as the destination for it weekend touring excursion.  So what changed?  In a single word – A LOT  Here is the article and your PICs.

UPDATED Solar Eclipse Ride, August 21st

Solar Eclipse Ride Plans:

We will have a 30 mile and 40 mile routes.   The ride will start at 9:00.  I suggest getting there before 8:30 so you can beat the traffic and we can get out on the road on time.  Probably be a good idea to leave home early as well and look for alternate routes to the Camplin Compound. The plan is to be back about an Hour and a half prior to the Eclipse so we can have plenty of time to watch the moon and sun move across the sky to their final convergence. The total eclipse is at 1:30.

Natchez Trace Incident

By now everyone has seen the Go-Pro video of the bicyclist being hit on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Everyone familiar with TN Traffic Laws says the bicyclist was LEGALLY "in the right." Frequently, victims of road rage are only exercising their legal rights.
However, the video also suggests that the bicyclist was in violation of good sense and basic courtesy.  It would have saved the bicyclist a lot of pain and time to have simply moved over as far to the right as practical (another TN Traffic statute) and given the motorist plenty of room to pass.

Yakima Roof Carrier

If anyone could use a Bike rooftop carrier that fits Yakima round or Thule Square cross bars, I have one.  It is the copperhead model. It has a locking skewer.

I also have a pair of 78" bars with the towers and attachments that fit an older Ford Explorer. (I doubt anyone can use the base attachments, but there ya go. The long bars are big enough to carry two canoes.

If interested let me know via this blog or you have my contact info on the Fogbee membership page.

Thanks,

Tom Benim

Awesome Ride today from the Gallatin Civic Center!

I want to take a minute to say what an awesome ride we had today from the civic center in Gallatin up to Hartsville and back. What a great group of riders we had in both groups! Yes it was hot, maybe the hottest day so far but there was no complaining, we all stated together and left no one behind. Everyone rode safe with great communication and most met afterwards at Prince Street Pizza for some good fellowship, pizza, cold beer and diet soda (Gary).
Thanks for making today special, I am blessed to have the Fogbees as friends and family. Thanks Doc, Gary, Lucy, Steve the sweeper, John, Danny, Jonathan, Doug, Adam and (Sean for a short while). If I left someone out I apologize but I think that was everyone in our group.
Miley and Lindsay did a little scouting for later in the year, stay tuned.
If you weren't there we missed you and hope to see you soon on another great Fogbee ride!

Bruce and County Exec Anthony Holt Talk Greenways

A rumor is floating that Bruce and County Exec Anthony Holt colluded to put speed bumps on Mud Hollow.  I am here to report - It's not true!

Yes, according to Doug Depew, there are speed bumps on Mud Hollow that could be very dangerous to those few FOGBEES that let 'er rip on downhills.  Doug says the bumps are in a very nasty spot.

Bruce and Anthony did have a long discussion on the future plans for greenways along Station Camp Creek road.  We have added all the details on the Hendersonville Bike/Ped Committee website page http://www.bikinhville.com/StationCamp.html

The details of their meeting will be published around June 15'th in a local magazine.  For an early look at the article http://www.bikinhville.com/files/GW/IndianLakePenLiving.pdf

Nashville's First Slow Ride for Seniors

Saturday, May 27, 2017 at 10:00 AM

This ride is part of Bike Month in May and is a tribute to those bicyclists that have defied the odds to continue pedaling past the age of senility.

Now designated as a Walk Bike Nashville Featured Ride!

Minimum age for this ride is 50 years of age and maximum is 105. You must show a Medicare card or other identification (AARP card will suffice). If you are younger than 50 and are accompanied by a senior then you will be allowed to ride. If you have bought a beer in the recent past for someone over 50 that is an acceptable qualification.

It should not be necessary to say this will be one damn slow ride.

Memphis in June Trip, June 9th and 10th

We are all set to go for our hotel reservations for you Memphis in June Trip.
on June 9th and 10th

We have a block of rooms reserved at the Double Tree Downtown Memphis.  The room rate is $149 and parking is $20 per night. The number is 901-528-1800 or you can go on line and reserve your room.

If you call to make your reservation, please make sure you let them know you are with the FOGBEES.   If you go on line to reserve your room, the code for our group is FOG.

On Friday night, we can get together at the Flying Saucer, which is just around the corner from the hotel.  On Saturday night, we will have dinner at the Rendezvous.    Option of hitting Beale St on one or both nights.

Change of plans on the routes.  I found some really nice routes heading north from downtown that follow the river, go through some nice parks and through pretty country.

Jersey Order-Fit Kits

Last week to try on fit kit jerseys and bibbs.

If you are interested in ordering a jersey or bibbs, I will have the fits kits after the rides this week.  I will need to return them after Saturday's ride.

We have to get a minimum of 6 of any one style for men and 4 of any one style for women.  Depending upon the demand, you may need to make choice 1 of one style and choice 2 of another so that we can fill an order.

If you are interested in the ALE Fogbee style jersey, you can order at the below link.  I believe it requires a minimum order of 10.  These run very small.  So, you really need to try one on to see what size you need.  I ordered a XXL and it is very tight on me when I normally where a L.

Kid's Triathlon Needs Help

In past years, FOGBEES have helped with the Kids Triathlon,  but so many of the FOGBEES who used to help no longer ride and the Heat NEEDS help.  Volunteers get a great t-shirt and a lot of personal satisfaction for a couple of hours of work.
The 13th Annual HEAT kids triathlon is being held on Saturday August 5th 2017.  We would really appreciate your help.   Please respond to this email if you are available, or if you know of anyone else who would like to help us.  There are various positions available on Saturday for marshaling (run and bike course), transition help, finish line help, registration (also a few spots left for Friday night registration), body marking and others.  If you have a preference, please indicate where you would like to be placed and we will do our best to position you in your choice.  Please, also let us know what T shirt size you would like.   Looking forward to another great HEAT kids triathlon.  We all know how much the kids love this event.

BikeGuard: Stolen Bike Recovery

Hello all!

Did you know that our officer friends with the Hendersonville Police Department establish a work relationship with BikeGuard, a FREE online Bike Registry, that allows cyclists to record their bicycles as stolen in a national database in the unfortunate case of a theft?

I know that all of us love our bikes very much and we ALWAYS take care to lock our bikes up properly when we leave them unattended with our vehicles, but in the unlikely but possible occurrence that one of our beloved bikes is swiped from us, this is a good back up plan to increase the chances of our bikes being recovered and returned to us.

Friendly bike computer reminder

For those of you that may have gotten new bikes over this bitter cold winter....or maybe new wheels or tires.  Your bike computer is most likely not calibrated with the correct tire size anymore.  Don't let your miles or average speed suffer.  Update your wheel size circumference before it gets warm and sweaty outside.
From Garmin's user manual:
700c x 23c   2096
700c x 25c   2105
700c x 28c   2136

If you need another size reference here: http://static.garmin.com/pumac/Edge_800_OM_EN.pdf

Cycling shoe recommendations

Looking for suggestions on new cycling shoes, please.  Unfortunately Ira and I skidded out on a corner coming home from White House yesterday...both of us are generally OK (road rash and stiff!), but the new Assos shorts from Santa and my shoes are both toast.  What shoes are best for year round riding (cool in the summer and potentially insert for the winter), comfortable, etc.

Thanks and appreciate any tips
