What a great time!

I agree with Tom E. that this ride was a blast and was for a great cause.  400 + riders, a beautiful morning and 62 miles hanging with the Draft master Miley. It was well put together, supported and with adequate rest stops. We had a group of 10 or so riders that pretty much drafted together for most of the morning. I did a personal best of 18.2 MPH for 62 miles. I was later arrested by Mr. Cat?/ Rabbit? for impersonating a Fogbee....

Kudos to Pedals For Paws

In just its fourth year, the Pedals for Paws team did an outstanding job.  Although it is hard to measure up to the premiere Harpeth River Ride, the P4P stacks up positively for all other area rides.  Where else can one get a tee-shirt, lunch, and an exceptionally well supported event for just $25.  With around 400 bicyclists, it's on its way to be the premiere event on our side of Nashville.

Recovery Advice

Looking for some Fogbee fellowship here,

I crashed going about 20 mph along Old Hickory on a solo century last weekend.  My front tire got caught in a set of train tracks that were on an angle across the road, and wham.  Since my tire got stuck, I went from 20 mph to 0 in one whack, which mean very little road rash but a higher impact slamming on the road.  My hip took most of the brunt of it, followed by my head.  Nothing broken (phew). but my hip still has a hematoma, which is finally down enough to start to give way to a nasty bruise.  I have a couple questions for veterans:
-How long does recovery usually take?  I am still really limping, can't walk/stand for more than about 5 min, and in quite a bit of pain after a full week.  Tried easing off the prescription pain killers, but can't really move at all without them yet (too much pressure on the hip and lower back).
-Ice vs heat?  Iced the first few days, now trying heat.  Neither seems to be working particularly well.
-My helmet is dented, but can't see a crack.  Can I still use it?

I would appreciate ANY advice or support, please.  This was my first real crash and I just can't believe how slow the recovery seems to be.  It is awfully frustrating for active people like ourselves to be immobile :(

Country Music Marathon Cycle Support

 On April 27 the Country Music Marathon is happening in Nashville. I am gathering the support cyclists to escort the elite runners, celebrity runners and wheelchair marathoners.  If you are interested in being one of the cyclists, please call me.   The requirements are simple. For the half marathon you need to be able to maintain 12 mph for 1 hour and 10 minutes. For the full marathon you need to be able to maintain that speed for 2.5 hours.  My past experiences have been great with this event, we meet at 530 at titan stadium and bike through closed roads up to the Starting Line at the  intersection of Elliston  and West End where we go into the VIP area and meet with the race director to get our final instructions and assignments ( and some food and coffee ).

Crash report

Thanks to all those who helped me limp in after my stupid crash today. I was daydreaming and did not pay attention to the speed the gentle appearing hill was creating.  Then I panicked and applied my brakes. Reports are it was spectacular. Where's the helmet cam when you need it?
After a shower and full body inspection, nothing looks to be of any concern.  I should be back in the saddle early next week.

Another Awesome Saturday ride

Hats off to Bruce and David for a superb 48 mile route today. What a great Fogbee and Music City Cyle rider turnout. It was one of my favorite routes so far and it was good to have Mr. Miley back on the road after a bout with the flu. I hope we do this route again this summer.

You're Never Too Old to Get on a Bike

      Whenever possible, I like to brag about someone who I think accomplished something extraordinary.  This time it’s about a family friend and “snowbird” whom we meet every couple of years in Florida.  We usually try to plan some outdoor activity such as kayaking in Ocala National Forest or skydiving at Deland airport.  This year the event was a bike ride across Florida from Deland to “the Villages” just north of Orlando.  I had originally planned a 100-mile loop for my brother-in-law and me, but decided to cut it back to 50 miles when this family friend asked to join.  You see, he is 74 years young, never rode a bike more than a couple of blocks, and rented a hybrid for the journey.  He’s the middle guy in the picture. Normally, I tell these bicyclists just to go home and not to attempt something this crazy.

Saturday Ride #2 from Cumberland Park, 3/23/13

We were very pleased to have about 50 riders participate and give comments on the USBR 23 North route alternatives last Saturday.  This Saturday we will ride the South route alternatives from Cumberland Park to Franklin and return.  

The ride starts in Cumberland Park at 9:00 Saturday, March 23.  Cumberland Park is located near the south side of Titans stadium on S 1st Street, between the Shelby Street Pedestrian and Korean Veterans Blvd Bridges.  Park in Lot R.

I got your name and contact information from William Anderson. I had asked him if he had any contacts with cycling groups in Sumner and Robertson County. Each year, the city of Millersville hosts Safety Day. This year,  it will be held at our new community center and I am looking to have more recreational content since the parks department has become the new hosts of this event. I am in hopes that your group might want to participate and set up a booth and maybe bring a bike or two. For all groups that participate, we ask that they bring some type of safety oriented display or literature while they also promote their organization or market their upcoming events. This might be a great way to do a bit of community outreach and maybe gain some new members from Millersville. Would your group have interest in participating in our event? Word of thanks..

I wanted to thank all the Fogbees (and a few non-Fogbees) who regularly turned out for the 5th straight season of Spinning at the YMCA. I was great fun, hard work and definately helped us get started for this years biking season.
Also, today was an awesome ride in Nashville with the Fogbees and the Music City Bike Club. A ton of riders on an Urban/Suburban ride. Met a new group of riders that share a common interest in biking.What a great day.

RAGBRAI - URGENT!

We would like to get a group of at least 4 to do the Bike Ride across Iowa.  Mike Knake and I are planning on it.    Ride starts July 21 to July 27 and we would return home on July 28.  We would share the ride to the beginning or end point of the ride.  It is not yet clear what the transport arrangements would be as it is a one way ride.  What we do know is if we want to go as a group only one person can apply.  Duplicate applications will void the individual and the group.  It is a lottery for spots with about 85% acceptance so the chances of getting in are good.  What we need from you sealing your commitment is the $150 ride fee that has to be submitted with the application. (Refundable if we do not get in)  The urgency is that the Pork Bellies Company that provides the transportation and handles your gear and sleeping arrangements for the ride is 70% sold out as of the end of February.  The plan is to get your commitment, get our reservation with Pork Bellies, which may involve an additional deposit, and then get the application in well before the April 1 deadline.  If you are interested in fulfilling this Bucket List ride, please plan on having your payment of $150 to me by Saturday March 9.  Post here, email bikenwalk@gmail.com, or call at 615-431-9821.

USBR 23 Route Evaluation Rides

During the last few months, Bruce Day and Dave Shumaker have met with city officials and bicycling community stakeholders to obtain suggestions and support for USBR 23.  This will be the first USBR in Tennessee and will provide a designated bicycle route connecting Bowling Green, KY through White House, Nashville, Franklin, and Lewisburg, TN to Huntsville, AL.  We have now consolidated suggestions into two separate North/South routes from White House to Franklin.

JERSEY ORDER

This will be our annual attempt to complete a FOGBEE Jersey order.  Collectively, we need to order at least ten (10) of the same style jersey (Short sleeve, sleeveless, long sleeve, etc...). After we meet that quota, we can order however many of any other product, but 10 of the same is the min requirement.  

March 31 is the deadline to place your order.  This is CASH ONLY order.  Give your check or cash to Doug Depew before the deadline.  If we do not meet the minimum, your money will be returned.

      The big surprise this year is Tour de Cure has moved again -- this time from Murfreesboro to Franklin TN as they search for more participation. Likewise, the Cystic Fibrosis Cycle for Life is searching for a new venue (something closer to population centers), ride date (August 17th is being considered), and sponsors (most of the FOGBEE members have resigned from the Committee).
      Also, follow club ride planning on the calendar in the right side-bar.  Dave Miley has been loading his recommendations to it.  As you plan for specific rides please get your proposed date on the calendar so it is set aside for your event. 

Bike Clinic - Sat 23rd

Bikers Choice Hendersonville would like to host a bike clinic and self supported bike tour for you club/group next Saturday.  

At 8:00am. we will host two clinics,  a "how to fix a flat clinic" and a "How to do routine maintenance clinic".

RAT - 2013

      Y'all have probably heard rumors of a Spring bike ride across the state of Tennessee to the Virginia Creeper Bike Trail.  It's not a rumor.  We're calling it the RAT - 2013 for Ride Across Tennessee. We managed to put together a core group of retirees or semi-retirees to pedal about 350 miles over six days from Bruce's house to the Virginia Creeper just north of Bristol Tennessee.  We have one SAG vehicle that holds six bicyclists returning from Virginia and promises of a second if needed.  Each bicyclist will be asked to trade off driving the SAG for about 15 miles.  It will carry all our over-night gear, emergency supplies, and refreshments for along the route rest stops.  It is also available if bicyclists get tired pedaling and want to relax the legs for part of the journey.
      The dates, routes, food stops, and evening stays are planned in detail and available for viewing at our adventure website http://RAT2013.blogspot.com .  For security reasons the site is private, but if you are interested contact Bruce Day and he can set you up to view and contribute to the planning. 
      Warning, this is a Turtle-Style trip; we will be in tour-mode and will ride about 65 miles each day.  That means riding at a comfortable pace, stopping along the way to view the sights, and taking lots of photos.  This trip is similar to the adventure several of us did last May with Aussie Bob from Bruce's house to Cincinnati. Several other FOGBEES are contemplating pedaling a couple of days on the route and have planned their own transportation.

World's Top Ten Bike Rides

      Fox News thinks it has the list of the Worlds top ten bike routes.  Check out this link. If been to a few of these places and did the Going-to-the-Sun road in Glacier National Part, fortunately by car.  I trailed along behind a couple of bicyclists as they climbed "the divide."  I told myself repeatedly, Glacier is a spectacular park and the last in mainland USA not overrun by tourists, but I am thankful I am NOT doing this by bike.
      I think Dave Shumaker has the bike touring bug as do several other FOGBEES.  I was asked about the tour I created on Nova Scotia, which could be used as a bike trip.  Anybody have any other ideas for a bike tour?

Bicyclist Killed

Murfreesboro has had another bicyclist killed a couple of nights ago.  He was on the road at 9PM. We are now trying to determine the causes of the accident.  Our good friend Sarah Lovett is Chairperson of the Rutherford County Bicycle Safety Committee established under the authority of the County.  She and the police have included us in their investigation.  At this time no charges have been filled against the 22-year old motorist. We'll report as soon as something more definitive become available.  Our issue is -- are there any lessons for FOGBEE night-riders.

The United States Bicycle Route System (USBRS) is a partially implemented network of interstate bicycle routes designed for long distance bicycle touring. USBRS routes are selected for their safety, comfort, scenic beauty, and access to exciting destinations and useful services. In many states, the USBRS is actively being mapped, signed, and put to good use. Bike/Walk Tennessee is working with TDOT, local municipalities and neighboring states to bring the USBRS to Middle Tennessee.
