We are planning a ride from the Chateau Ross Winery on the 31st.  We will do a ride followed by lunch and a wine tasting at the winery.  The cost is $25 per person for the lunch and tasting.  If you desire, you can bring your own beer.  Non riding spouses definitely invited.

The ride will start at 9:00AM.  Below is a link to the winery with the address.

Following the ride, Chateau Ross with have appetizers and a wine tasting for us. Following the appetizers and tasting they will serve us lasagna with salad, etc. for lunch.

Based upon the routes, I expect that we will be back to the winery around 12:30PM.  Non riding spouses can join us at that time.

We need to know ASAP if you are interested so the winery can start getting ready for us.  Please post your intentions.

See you Saturday,
Mike Knake

Smoky Mountain Wheelman Century

I found this ride online earlier in the year. It is in East Tennessee around the time the Fall colors will be pretty. I want to do the century route. Last year while riding the Dancing Bear ride in April, some of us met some locals at the bike shop in Maryville. While home recently, I asked about this ride and it was highly recommended. I'm not aware of any local rides the weekend of October 11 and would love to have some fellow Fogbees join in for this one. Check it out!

The Right Clothes for your First Century

DTI, our most aged veteran competitive bicyclist, wants to be sure newbees were dressed properly for this weekend's Clarksville Century.  One small note contrary to the video, however, the chamois is not a substitute for "Depends."

Pilot Safety Program on Natchez Trace

The Natchez Trace Parkway Association is working with Adventure Cycling Association and NPS to develop a pilot  cycling safety program for national parks (that will also have carryover benefits for urban areas).  One of the first two test sites will be between Leiper's Fork and Nashville.   The second will be in Tupelo.   ACA signed an agreement with NPS to become its cycling partner for national parks, and they selected the parkway for the first pilot program.  We are hopeful that this program will direct a lot of resources and attention to cycling on the parkway, in addition to developing programs to make cycling safer everywhere.   One idea is to develop a sharrows ("Bikes may use entire lanes")  to improve awareness and then to test the effectiveness.  Focus group sessions will be developed as part of this pilot program for cyclists and motorists to provide feedback and help find some solutions.     If successful, the work we put into this program here in Tennessee as well as Mississippi and Alabama will help save cyclists' lives across the country in both park and non-park settings.

JERSEYS ARE ORDERED!!!!!!!

WOW-what a great responses!  We received 100 orders for jerseys.  We placed the order to LG today.   We have sent our art work in to them. They will input it into their system and send us back rendering along with cloth samples with our selected colors on them for us to review.  Once we approve the final art work, they will start production.   Hopefully production will start in 2 weeks. We should have jerseys sometime in the first half of July.

Will keep you posted on the blog.

Thanks for all your support,

Mike, Dave, Gary and Doug

Great Response from the City

We often hear how slow the City responds to requests.  I would like to share a recent exchange between Miley and the City that's worth acknowledging.  He was concerned about blockage of the shoulder that we use for bike travel.

From: david miley: 5/21/14 Subject: RE: Shoulder Obstruction on West Main Street
Wow. That was fast. Thank you very much for the quick response and having the changes made so quickly.

5/15/14:
David, We are working with Speedway’s engineer to get all  concerns addressed before Speedway can open. We will look into your concern about the curb, also. Thank you for bring it to our attention.
Sincerely, Jerry Horton

I later noticed a second area at the site , closer to the Rockland intersection, where the shoulder has been removed and replaced by a curb defining an entrance lane to the site. Photo attached.

US-31 E / W. Main St. Shoulder Obstruction

Once again, a new convenience store has obstructed the shoulder on Main Street. This time at West Main and Rockland. The raised-curb fixture comes all the way out to the traffic lane. I'm contacting the City to voice my objection and ask if this complies with codes and regulations and was approved. Does anyone know if this is a violation?
