FedEx Rock 'n Roll MS150

This past weekend the FOGBees were represented at the FedEx Rock 'n Roll MS150 by Bob Miller, Nicole Ellis and Phil & Lisa Houston. Leaving from the Desoto Civic Center in Southaven, MS and riding to Tunica, MS (and back) the ride was well-planned and supported. The accommodations at Harrah's Tunica Resort were exceptional and included with registration for the ride.

Day one started out cloudy and turned to an outright rain shower for at least 20 miles. The Italian dinner that night was followed by a presentation by the NMSS that highlighted rides all over the US. The Jack & Back photos included none other than FOGBee Godfather, Tom Evans, proudly wearing his colors! Bob was recognized during the awards for having ridden in MS150 rides for the past 19 years.

Day two was beautiful and windy! We climbed the fabled hill known as "The Wall" -- ON THE TANDEM!!! We even passed some riders on "single" bikes on the way up. :) Lunch overlooked the scenic Arkabutla Lake reservoir and provided a nice rest midway through the ride. At the finish line, we were greeted with medals to mark our accomplishment of having ridden the distance and a full lunch of Neeley's Memphis Barbecue.

We were sure to "Re-Cycle" for next year's ride and hope that more FOGBees will consider joining us on the adventure. Check out Shutterfly for the photos I managed to snap along the way.

Dobbins PIke Rumbling Violates Agreement with TDOT

Dobbins Pike north of Gallatin was resurfaced and rumbled in late August 2010.  The appli-cation violates TDOT March 2010 specification for Rumbling.  We have reported the issue to Bike/Ped Coordinators both in TDOT and the Nashville MPO and are waiting an explanation. For pictures click here

Greenway Updates & CLEAN-UP

I appreciate the great encouragement from Phil on this community clean-up.  Our first clean-up will be THIS SUNDAY (8/29/10) at 1PM.  Bring flat blade shovels & brooms and meet at Sams.  Riding & hydration after wards optional.

Nashville:
Went for a greenways ride this afternoon.  All of Shelby Bottoms plus Two Rivers plus Stones River Greenways past Ravenwood up to Lebanon Road are okay (good news).  The Lebanon Road crossing including the bridge and its approaches plus the tunnel have gotten their final asphalt paving (good news).  However, about 100 yards past Kohl's parking lot a low stretch of the greenway has an inch or more of mud from the last flooding (bad news).  There were lots of bike tracks thru the mud but I know from the May flood that this is the first of several muddy stretches all the way to PP Dam.  I've heard no calls for cleanup volunteers.
Dave Irvine

Hendersonville:
We tried to ride the greenway last Wednesday and found the section north of the new Drake's Creek Bridge under water (and hope it didn't get washed out).  Sections of the greenway are still torn-up and caked with mud from the May flood.  I thought a good community project for the FOGBEES would be to get a few shovels and clean the mud from the trail (would take about an hour).  Any volunteers?  How about the FOGBEES adopt this greenway?

The Alliance Helps BWT Celebrate

The Alliance for Biking and Walking helps Bike Walk Tennessee celebrate its birthday.

http://www.peoplepoweredmovement.org/site/index.php/site/blog/2951/

I have mailed a copy of our Annual Report to the many people who have helped make this first year possible.

Thanks again! Without your support none of this can happen AND we are just beginning.

Thanks to FOGBEES that Volunteered.

Dear Wonderful, Fantastic, Unselfish VOLUNTEERS, (is that enough praise to assure that you will volunteer for next year's kid's triathlon?)

THANK YOU all for a job well done! We had 50+ volunteers this year and used every one of you too. This was HEAT's Sixth year to put on the Kid's Triathlon and first year as a SELL OUT. This was our best year yet thanks in part to great people like you!

A Special Thanks to the FOGBEE'S. They volunteered at nine bike course positions! Loved seeing all those BEE jerseys on the course!

If you have any thoughts, comments or suggestions about this year's race that we can use for next year's race. Feel free to email me at spinjunkie@comcast.net.

Again, Thank you very much for giving up a few hours of your Saturday morning to help keep our kids safe!

Update on Hville greenway

The greenway is paved under the RR bridge near the soccer fields at Drakes Creek Park. The new bridge across the creek is open. However, much of the trail on both sides leading up to it is unpaved. This is a follow up to our discussion after Wed. night lite ride.

St Louis Detailed Plans

We've put a "basic" plan together for the trip on the Web Site with route maps for Saturday and Sunday.  As you plan what you want to do, please keep in mind the weather (half of the route is without shade) and the touristy stuff we will be doing on the way up.  Expect to take 4 to 5 hours getting to Grafton and then add an hour for lunch.  If you are riding back, you can probably do it in less than 3 hours (if you don't get lost or have mechanical issues).
If you still have questions, please comment and I'll try to get answers or fill-in any blanks.

St Louis Update -Please Play for Info

THATS WHY I CALL HIM "THE POSTMAN"

Today was "barter" day for a lot of work at my house, in exchange for a hotel room in St. Louis, for Jim. This morning, as you know, there was a brutal storm and I figured Jim would not appear. There he was, drenched from his bike ride over to my home, sitting on my porch at 6:30 am. He trimmed trees, put down 9 yards of mulch and was still working when I dropped by and brought him a sandwich at lunch. My wife said she couldn't believe he showed up in this weather. My reply " That's why we call him The Postman". If you need any work done around your home send Jim an email at crowtrck5@gmail.com

ANOTHER UPDATE FOR ST. LOUIS

PLEASE RESPOND TO THE PRIOR POST AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE DOING THE LONG OR SHORT RIDE SO WE CAN SEE HOW MANY VEHICLES WE NEED TO HAVE IN GRAFTON. SHORT RIDE IS 43 AND LONG IS 86 MILES. LESS THAN HALF THE RIDERS HAVE RESPONDED.
ALSO: IT HAS BEEN DECIDED THAT IF YOU ARE DRINKING BEER AT THE FRIDAY COOKOUT IT IS BYOB. THIS WILL KEEP THE COST DOWN AND EACH PERSON CAN BRING THE BEER THEY LIKE. OTHER REFRESHMENTS WILL BE PROVIDED. THANK YOU.

H'ville Cop Stops Bicyclists on Gallatin Road

It’s been reported to me that Hendersonville Police pulled over bicyclists who were riding four-abreast down Gallatin Road.  The policeman did not issue a citation but only a warning for what he believed to be reckless behavior on the part of the cyclists.  Luckily, the cyclists, not FOGBEES, acted respectively with the officer and the incident did not become an issue.  That often is not the case.  However, as a Director and Officer of Bike Walk Tennessee, I recommend the police enforce the laws with bicyclists.

Thank you

For my first post, I wanted to thank the FOGBEES for letting me ride along this past month. It has been a real learning experience, very enjoyable and rewarding. The instructions and patience has been terrific. Of the ones that I have met so far, I think I am the OG (old guy).

UPDATE ON ST. LOUIS TRIP

There are officially 32 people going on the trip! 30 will be at the cookout. I will get you the address and phone number for Todd's this weekend.
FIRST:
THOSE WHO ARE RIDING ON SATURDAY PLEASE POST IF YOU ARE DOING THE ENTIRE 86 miles or if you are only doing 43 miles and stopping at Grafton at the lunch stop. WE MUST HAVE THIS INFO to determine how many vehicles need to be left in Grafton on Friday night so we have enough room to get you back to Collinsville after lunch.
SECOND:
Jim (postman) is working this week for a few Fogbees to earn enough money to go to St. Louis. HE NEEDS A RIDE TO AND FROM. I would be glad to take him but my wife, son and sister-in-law are riding with me and we have no room. Please consider giving Jim a ride for the trip and let me know if you can. It would be appreciated. (please note: This message has been approved by Jim C. and he is responsible for its contents. Paid for by Fogbees, Inc. , a division of Fogbees Beer and Distributing Co. , Perth, Austrialia. )

Can I go Riding?

Fogbee Good Deed For The Day

First of all, thanks to Bob and Peggy for another great pool party!

I'm happy to report that the cell phone found by Jim C. has been returned to its rightful owner, who was tracked down thanks to the efforts of Joe. The owner was very grateful, and said she hadn't even realized that she had lost it until we called.

PLEASE HELP with Kids Triathlon - Aug 7'th

Time is running out to reserve your spot to help with the Kids triathlon. This event will take place at the Hendersonville YMCA, and the Fogbees have filled all of the early spots except 2. If you would like to help with this event please email spinjunkie@comcast.net before it is too late. This is a great way to promote the FOGBEES in a positive light. We have all participated in rides where the volunteers make a difference in the success of the event. It will only take a couple of hours and we will plan a group ride afterwards. If you decide to volunteer please let Charlene know you are with the Fogbees and she will give you and early spot so we will still have time to ride.

Bob G.

Hello FOGBEES!

This is Charlene Alcorn, Volunteer Coordinator for the HEAT Kids Triathlon 2010! It was so great to have such a strong showing of Fogbee volunteers at last year's Kids Triathlon. The run/bike course requires nearly 50 volunteers to ensure the safety of our young athletes. I am beginning to collect names of volunteers for this years' event.

I see you all already have the HEAT Kids Triathlon on your Calendar for August 7 at 7am. Thank you for doing that! Like last year, all volunteers get a Kids Tri T-shirt and an unlimited amount of warm fuzzies for volunteering 1.5-2.5 hours of your Saturday morning. Plan to arrive at the YMCA no later than 6am on Saturday, August 7 for your assignment. If you know you are going to volunteer this year, please email me at spinjunkie@comcast.net so I can add you to my volunteer list.

Thanks so much everyone!
Ride Safe,
Charlene

Miscellaneous Info

In the past several months we have had quite a few new FOGBEES join. It is certainly great to see the Club growing.
.
JERSEYS: Several have asked where can I get a jersey. Unfortunately, Bob just completed an order and I am not sure of his plans. However, we have several people who no longer ride with the group and may wish to sell their jersey. If you know about any jerseys for sale, please have them send their info to FOGBEES@gmail.com. We'll post their offer in our Swap Shop.

We can order jerseys anytime as long as we have a minimum of 10 pcs. Bob G.
.
PHOTOS: Please remember we have a GREAT photo website at http://fogbees.shutterfly.com/ (see link in menu above.) We no longer use Snapfish.
.
MEMBERS LIST: The membership list is up-to-date. If you forgot the password to open it, ask a FOGBEE.
.
CALENDAR: Please watch the calendar. This thing really works great. If you have an event that other FOGBEES should know about, put it on the calendar. If you have any trouble with it, send for help at the above noted email address.

Maintaining the Bike

Bicycle Tutor is an excellent website with instructions and videos (48 by last count) on how to repair and maintain a bike.  It is so good it deserves to be included on the FOGBEE blog  - see the Menu Bar under the Banner.

ST.LOUIS UPDATE-IMPT.

We are now less than three (3) weeks away from the MCT trail ride in Illinois and we have a huge group going. Presently we have 32 people going , of which 25 are riders! There is still time to join if you want to come on this trip.
IN ORDER TO MAKE PLANS FOR FRIDAY NIGHT'S COOKOUT (THE 13TH) AT MY BROTHER IN LAWS HOME I NEED A HEAD COUNT OF WHO WILL BE ATTENDING. PLEASE PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT OR CALL ME AND TELL ME WHO WILL BE THERE. THE PARTY STARTS AROUND 6:30-7:00 AND WILL GO ON UNTIL 10 OR 11 PM. The reason this is so impt. is that we need to know how much food, beer, desserts , beverages, etc. we need. Remember we are all splitting equally the cost of this that night. Also, Todd has a new in-ground pool and he invites us all to swim that night. This is a great way to start out the weekend trip so I hope you will all come to the cookout. IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED IF YOU WOULD COMMENT OR CALL BY THIS COMING TUESDAY NIGHT. Details on Todd's address in Edwardsville will be provided soon. Thanks for your cooperation. Gary and Cindy

Public Hearing on Sumner County Plan

The Sumner County Regional Planning Commission will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at 5 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Sumner County Administration Building located at 355 N. Belvedere Dr. in Gallatin, Tennessee.  The purpose of the public hearing is to gather additional public input regarding the adoption of the 2035 Comprehensive Plan.

The 2035 Comprehensive Plan outlines Sumner County's vision for the future involving land use, transportation, and natural & cultural resources.  This vision includes rural villages with a unique sense of place, availability of services to county residents, completing improvements to existing roadways such as Highway 109, expanding walking and biking choices (we have added Complete Streets Policy), developing a regional mass transit system in Middle Tennessee, and protecting natural resources and cultural assets important to the county's heritage. Making a Difference

What a welcome surprise! Bike Advocates were told it was not possible.  But thanks to a LOT of bicyclists showing up at the city and regional planning meetings (remember early 2009), they demonstrated that greenways and bike facilities were a priority in Sumner County.

What am I talking about? Click here to find out.

Tour de France

Go Lance ! Go team RadioShack ! Contdor or Schleck, who are you rooting for ?
Any FOGBEES following the biggest bike race in the universe ?

Watching the ride over the cobblestones in Belgium reminded me of following Bruce into Cedars of Lebanon Park through the back door. The fields of wheat are reminiscent of our treks through Orlinda on the way to Grafitti Road and the Tour de Cure. The crashes remind me of ..... let's skip that subject.

If you've not tuned into Versus on the tube, then you've still got many, many stages to go over the next two and a half weeks. Stage 5 is tomorrow. Makes me miss my bike while here in Hilton Head. Lookin' forward to some more miles with Team FOGBEES.

IMPORTANT SAINT LOUIS INFORMATION

Hey everyone:
It is now only five (5) weeks until our trip to Illinois. If you are going please make your reservation in the next ten (10) days. We need to get a headcount for the Friday night cookout at my brother-in-laws. Also, it is anticipated that the Hotel will get booked in the next few weeks because: 1) It is the weekend for the state college students to move in for school at Edwardsville and their parents come and stay in hotels in the area and 2) it is the weekend of the Cards -Cubs rivalry and the hotels in the area get booked...SO please do not wait.
Once you have made your reservation please post on the blog and notify us at fogbees@gmail.com  so we can update the "hotel count". Thanks ...Gary
