Benefit Concert on March 21'st

Michael Montgomery was hit by a dump truck while riding in a designated bike lane on Hwy. 96 in Franklin near the Trace. Michael almost died twice, once at the scene and in surgery. He spent a week in the Vanderbilt Trauma Unit where his pelvis had to be reattached to his spine. He is now in the rehabilitation center at Vandy.

United States Bicycle Route System

. . The United States Bicycle Route System (USBRS) is gaining support daily. Click a state to see the most up-to-date state status on the project. The National Corridor Plan identifies 50-mile wide corridors, both prioritized (numbered) and un-prioritized (faint brown corridors). The Plan can change, based upon state opportunities and interests, with new corridors or realignments. As corridors turn into routes, the lines will go from wide swaths of color to defined routes. Links to U.S. Bike Route (USBR) maps, state bike maps and informational websites will be provided as they become available.

Michael Montgomery accident

The recent accident where Michael Montgomery was hit by a truck on Highway 96 has members of the Harpeth Bike Club seriously upset.  Recent posts have suggested:

How about a MASSIVE group ride to the capitol to help deliver the  message?  Say 200-300 riders (hopefully more) with print/TV  coverage......is this doable?
I feel some type of concerted effort, on a  grand scale, is required to get the attention of lawmakers and law enforcement.  We owe it to those who have been seriously injured/killed in the past........as  well as those in the future, which on any given day could be one of us.

Sebring 12/24 Update

Speaking of dogs, we rode all day and half the night at the Sebring event without a single dog sighting.

Jennifer finished with 181 miles and I managed to get in 207 before fatigue set in and made me quit.

Marilynn made a fantastic Fogbee crew chief, but next year I need to get her a Fogbee flag to stake out our area in the pit lane.

Working for TN Bicyclists

. . Bike Walk Tennessee (BWT) has been busy in the last several months working for bicyclists and pedestrians in Tennessee.  It joined forces with advocates across the nation to petition Congress not to cut federal funding to programs supporting bike/ped and has been successful. (Read Here).
. . To insure Tennessee continues to benefit from federal actions, Anthony Siracusa, Secretary/Director of BWT is leading one of the largest delegations to DC for the National Bike Summit in March. (Read Here)  They will have personal meetings with each of Tennessee's Congressional Representatives
. . As a local initiative BWT has introduced a bill in the TN General Assembly to improve safety for Bike/Ped (Read Here).  It is also communicating with other legislative sponsors to be sure that other bills such as HR0064 don't reduce safety for Bike/Peds.
. . TDOT has asked Bruce Day (Director of BWT) to lead the development of a cross-Tennessee Bike Route as part of a national effort contracted to Adventure Cycling Assoc. by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. He seeks help from bicyclists across Tennessee, in neighboring states, and from FOGBEES.

More Progress for Tennessee Bicyclists

Hey Frank (Bowyers), Remember back in the days of the Hendersonville Greenway Committee and you bitched to me about the bicycle stuff being removed from the Driver’s License manual.  Well, I took the problem to the MPO and TDOT and kept after it.  We got a promise last year that it was going back on the manual. It’s done!  See below.

Race Day Volunteers

Most of you know that I started racing last year and the team I am now on hosts a race each year that starts the season. We could not do this with out volunteers. That's why I am posting this. We need volunteers and I know how awesome you all are so I wanted to ask if any of you would be willing to volunteer for us. We will need folks to help with registration, drive lead vehicles, set up, tear down, corner marshall, etc. The date of Hell of the South is April 2nd. If you have any desire to help, please let me know an I will give you more details.

TDOT Design Meeting Rescheduled

TDOT will conduct a design public meeting on Thursday, February 24, 2011 in the small auditorium of Springfield High School, 5240 Hwy 76 East, Springfield, TN to discuss SR-65 (U.S. 431) from Old Highway 431 to Walling Road in Robertson County as shown on the general location map.
The meeting will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. during which time there will be a presentation and question and answer session. The public is invited to ask questions and make comments during the meeting. Representatives from TDOT will be present to answer questions on any aspect of the project. The preliminary plans will be displayed and the public is invited to review the displays anytime within the scheduled two hours.

Kerry Roberts Gets Republican Nod for Diane Black Seat

Kerry Roberts of Springfield, a CPA, owner of a consulting company and several bicycle shops in Nashville, and a favorite of many FOGBEES won the Republican vote for the State Senate seat vacated by Diane Black  He won by wide margins in Robertson County and ran a strong third in Sumner. The 18th District seat covers all of Robertson and all but one precinct in Sumner. Unofficial results from the Tennessee Department of State showed Roberts with 2,331 votes, to Slater’s 1,709 and Bondurant’s 1,572.
