Ouch!

I may be out of commission for a little while. Moving along at about 25 mph on the fast S. Mt. Pleasant Road today, a pickup pulled out from a driveway right in front of me. I got on the brakes hard, scraping the rear rubber down into the plies, and tried to maneuver but still slammed into the front fender and planted my face into the hood. I now have 6 stitches in my chin, 3 front teeth broken and shoved back, and a stiff, sore neck. As for the bike, the front wheel is a bit out of round, the headset has some looseness and the fork steerer tube appears bent. We'll see what the shop says. Overall, i'm considering myself fortunate that it wasn't worse. I hope to get back on the road with you all soon. Please ride safe and alert!

Prelude to Pool Party @ Bob and Peggy's

Thanks to Bob and Peggy Gluting for a great finish to our July calendar of cycling. The cool showers and low cloud cover provided a carefree atmosphere. Appreciate all the FOGBEES who turned out to share the H'ville gangs "backyard" townie ride. Twas a great opportunity to converse and socialize while cruising the area via the greenway, which the Wiz of Fog, Tom Evans, has worked so very hard to secure for posterity.

As always, we managed to have fun like good FOGBEES should do !

It's that time of year again. We will have the 3rd annual Fogbee pool party on July 30th. This year we will be having Shane's BBQ for lunch $5 per person to cover lunch. All you will have to provide your drinks. .


Doug Depew will be in charge of Frozen margaritas this year and they will be $20 per bucket. Please see Doug if you would like a bucket.

Crikey Cadel! An Incredible Tour!

Whether you were for Cadel, Andy or someone else in the GC, this tour offered plenty of awesome, surprising, and terrifying moments. Thor showed that he IS the god of thunder. Despite Andy's attack for the ages with 2 HC mountains to go on Thursday, Voeckler showed that Frenchmen can be very tough, surprising everyone including himself by keeping the yellow jersey until the last mountain of the tour. Oh yeah, Cavendish is still the fastest to the line in a group sprint, winning 5 more stages.

But it was Cadel meeting the challenge throughout the tour. Never caught out of position. Won a stage early. Almost single handedly reduced the gaps when Andy attacked in the Alps, staying just within a minute of Andy going into Saturday's ITT. Many thought it was too much time to make up in 26 miles. Not only did he make up the minute, he ended up winning the tour by over a minute. One of the greatest ITT rides in history.

Seeing Cadel on the podium between the Schlecks said it all. He was outnumbered 2 to 1, and still won. Crikey indeed.

Red Boiling Springs Ride

Shirley and I drove the course today. WOW!! I was out of breath going up the Hill from Hell in my car. Shirley will be on the course both days. She will have cold water, some snacks, and basic first aid stuff with her. She will set up a rest stop, day 1, under the pavilion at the Pleasant Shade elementry school around the 46mi mark. We can figure out ways best to do on day 2 sat evening. Her cell # is 615 598 1576. If you have any special needs or can think of anything else that she needs to carry just call her and let her know. She can also carry any gear that you have from Sams to RBS. This shoud be an amazing ride. Roger

Old Hickory Classic - This Week End

On Saturday and Sunday this weekend, July 16th-17th 2011, Team BC will host the first annual “ Old Hickory Classic” MTB weekend.  It will involve a series of events for all levels mountain bike riders.

Red Boiling Springs Ride, Last Blog update

Ok, so I finally got to work on the details.Here are best guesses at cues, for Day 1, Day 2, and itinerary.  According to their husbands, Shirley Schindler has kindly volunteered to do Sag along the way and Sharyn Evans and Rosemary Vickery will ride sweep in case some of us are overcome by heat, altitude gain, or eat too much lunch. We'll definitely need a SAG stop for water and a snack in Pleasant Shade.  Please print and look over the attachments for reasonableness. Let me know if you have corrections, questions or suggestions.  Some points to consider and questions to answer:

BBQ Ride

We usually have the BBQ ride in June but that has passed us by. Any interest in doing the route July 16? We still have a shot at it being the hottest day of the year.

Overnight ride to Red Boiling Springs. Update

From time to time it is mentioned that we have no Fogbee overnight rides this year.  Part of this is due to the number of other scheduled rides now available and the difficulty of getting a non conflicting week. In way, that is a good thing because it indicates how popular cycling has become.  The weekend of July 23-24 appears to be conflict free. The plan would be to Leave Saturday morning, ride 60 miles to Red Boiling Springs and  stay at the Armour Hotel,$85 to $130 per couple including breakfast.  The Armour House does not routinely serve supper but will for groups of 6 or more for $14/pp.  The nearby Thomas House is having a dinner theater play that night. It usually cost $25/pp including meal. If anyone is interested in that, I can check for sure.

You can view rooms at Armours Hotel and call 615-699-2180 for reservations. Please tell them you are a Fogbee and if you plan to eat supper there.  They need a head count.

GO USA WOMEN in the FIFA WORLD SOCCER CUP

Hats off to the US Womens Soccer team for defeating Brazil in one of the most amazing victories I have ever seen in modern sports. USA won on penalty kicks but before this occurred they had to tie the game. Despite numerous,unbelievable and terrible calls against Team USA by a rotten referee these ladies would not die. Tour de Fat - This Saturday

Yes folks, the Tour de Fat will once again be meandering and pandering through 13 U.S. cities spreading the good word about the positive societal offerings of the bicycle. Along with our exceptional ability to roust a city"s inner-cyclist, in 2011 we hope to drive our message even deeper by bringing you the biggest, most enjoyable traveling bike festival that we know of.

The Ride begins at 10 am at Centennial Park, but be there early to register.

501c3 Determination

On July 5'th Bike Walk Tennessee a non-profit Tennessee corporation received its official IRS determination letter that it is considered a 501c3 public charity and as such all contribution to it are tax deductible to the donor, effective August 18, 2009.  Bike Walk Tennessee appreciates the contributions of time and money from everyone committing to promoting bicycling and walking activities in Tennessee.

Aspiring FOGBEE has her first road rash... After a spectacular crash on Sunday, Eliana's proud and ready to ride again. Mom is recovering from a minor stroke. :-) I've had to promise to take her on the next FOGBEE Greenway ride and let her wear my jersey. Do they make them in kid sizes?

Fogbees ride with the Blind Bikers Across America

Just look what cycling can get you into. Four Fogbees just completed a two day ride down the Natchez Trace Parkway from just south of the Highway 96 bridge to Colbert's Ferry in Alabama.  David Buckman, Andrew Getter, and Bruce Day rode as captains paired with  blind stokers.  David Irvine provided much needed bike maintenance along the way.  The trip concluded with activities in and about the Helen Keller museum.  Even with sore everythings it was smiles all around when we crossed the Tennessee river. The laws of motion: Drivers to face stricter penalties for striking bicyclists, pedestrians

Tomorrow it becomes law. Bike Walk Tennessee, a statewide organization advocating for bicyclist and pedestrian rights, started drafting the law in February after hearing reports of bicyclists and pedestrians who were killed by drivers who went on to face what Bike Walk Tennessee believes are paltry charges.

"We've seen people get run over and killed with no consequences. This law brings criminal consequences and increases the possibility of having a civil lawsuit as well," said Caroline Cooley, a Knoxville member of the board of directors for Bike Walk Tennessee.

“Sorry I Didn’t See You” is no longer a legal excuse

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (June 20, 2011) With four grandchildren and eight great children, Jerry Norman, 74, wanted to keep fit and active to enjoy their company. So, on the advice of his doctor, Norman took up walking. But, on his regular early morning walk on June 29, 2010, a driver fell asleep at the wheel and killed Norman while he walked on a Nashville sidewalk. His family suffered the loss of a loved one — and a travesty of justice when, under current Tennessee law, the motorist could not be prosecuted for any crime.

In spite of crowded roads, multiple flat tires, hot temps, and repeated PUC's, the FOGBEES finished in the style we've become acquainted with and known for.

Some may ride further, faster, and lighter in the saddle, but the FOGBEES can't be beat when it comes to having fun !

A Note from Yik

Hi fellow fogbees,

My name is Yik Yang.  I rode with you a few times in the past.  One year ago, I had a serious cycling accident on long hollow pike.  Some of you called me and even visited me, and I would like to express my appreciation to you.  Thank you for your love and care.  After the accident, I was flew to the ICU.  After a few days in the ICU, I was transferred to the rehab hospital.  I stayed in the hospital for about 2 weeks.  After that, I rested at home for about 2 months before I went back to work.  It was really a miracle that I am alive and working.  When I was admitted into the ICU, the doctors said that I probably will not survive, since I had serious head injuries.  After I survived, the doctor said that I will never be an engineer again, since I was injuried on the left side of my brain (logical side).  Now, I have lived another year (hopefully, many more years to come), and I am still doing fine as an engineer.  I am totally recovered.  Thank God! 

I am so glad that I rode with all of you.  I am taking another job in CO, so I will be moving.  I meant to meet up with you guys once more, but I missed my chance.  When you come to CO, let me know, I will show you around.  So many cyclists and routes in CO.  I am really jealous, but my wife would kill me first before I buy another bike :)

Cannonball exceeds 55MPH

. . Unquestionably on October 22'nd we'll be treated to the most spectacular views of Middle Tennessee in the first ever Cystic Fibrosis Cycle for Life.  Bruce and Miley have conspired on the most breath-taking route through Sumner, Macon, and Trousdale counties with views that match anything in the Smokey Mountains.  Exhilarated by what he was seeing on our Friday scouting trip by bike, the Cannonball coasted down Ford Branch at over 55MPH.  He said, "I could have hit 60MPH, but a twinge in my shoulder reminded me to slow down."
. . The event will be climaxed with a party on the hill.

Borrow a Bike

My nephew, age 30-ish and an experienced bike rider, is visiting this week.  Since he flew in, he couldn’t bring his bike.  He’s too tall for our bikes.  Does anyone have a 58 (or something close) that we could borrow until next Wednesday? Our phone number is 230-1710.
