Oh Man, Don't Get Dropped!

The summer newsletter is scheduled for distribution on August 5'th.  It is packed with articles from veteran FOGBEES sharing their expertise on topics of interest to club members.  Thanks to Dave Shumaker, even Adventure Cycling is providing a contribution to this issue.

Oops, one problem.  The newsletter goes ONLY to FOGBEE members whose email address is correctly recorded on file in our membership list.  If you don't remember receiving the June newsletter, we have a problem.  If you don't know how to open the membership list to check the address we have for you, check a past newsletter. The instructions are in the footnotes.  If all attempts fail, send a note to our membership administrator, Janice, at fogbees@gmail.com.  We're sure she'll get you fixed up.

Newsletter and Membership List

The Newsletter is scheduled to issue on August 5'th.  So if you have an article or notice for inclusion, please send it to Fogbees@gmail.com no later than July 31'st.  The newsletter is private and issues only to Fogbees.  Likewise the archives are private and we request members not to share it with non-Fogbees.

We routinely receive requests to access the membership list.  Instructions for accessing the list along with the ID and password are included in the footnotes of every newsletter.  So you should save the last newsletter until the next one is issued.  If you aren't receiving the newsletter, then either we have your email address incorrect or your SPAM filter is blocking us.  Please send a correction to Fogbees@gmail.com and we'll check it out for you.

July 27'th Pool Party

It is once again that time of year.  

We will be having the 5th Annual Fogbee pool party following our July 27th ride.  

After the ride we will have lunch and an afternoon of swimming.

This year we will have Lunch from Shane's BBQ.  It will cost $8.00 per person and we will have Pork and Chicken and sides.  

All you will need to bring is folding chairs and your choice of beverages.  I will need to have a head count by July 24th so I can order the food.   The RSVP's can be made via the BLOG or Fogbee email address . Please watch the BLOG for more information.

They will be $20 dollars per bucket.

Routes: The super short Ultra Lite ride will be at 9:30am a.25 mile Total Townie .  The Turtle Lite ride starts at 9:00 and is 33 miles called 33 mile Pool Party Happy Hollow that does some townie, some Hendersonville greenway and country roads. The long route is 51 miles and leaves Bob's at 8:00am   Click the link of your choice for map and queue sheet.51 mile Route

Fogbees Mountain Bike Ride

I would like to gauge the interest in putting on a once a week Fogbee mountain bike ride at either the Lock 4 mountain bike trail in Gallatin or the new Hendersonville trail located behind Sam's Club in Hendersonville. This ride would either be a Sunday early morning ride or an evening ride on Monday. We would ride from 1-2 hours depending on which trail and which day we were doing it. This ride would be beginner friendly and if it is purely beginners, we could start by riding the Hendersonville trail as it has no rocks and very little roots to navigate over. If you have a mountain bike and have been tentative about riding trails, this is a good opportunity to give this fun sport a try. Please post if you are interested in doing this and which day would work best for you.

Impromptu 3 day tour from Oakdale to Hendersonville.

David Shumaker and I seized the opportunity of a car transport to Oakdale, TN and had a three day tour riding back to Hendersonville. We did some US Bicycle Route scouting and a Warm Showers visit.  It was an adventure.  We have photos on the Fogbee Shutterfly site accessible  by the link on the right panel. As always, we did not take enough pictures  to adequately document the trip and words do not suffice.
Small group short trips like this are great for meeting people  and seeing things you'd never encounter otherwise. Not all surprises are pleasant but even those make for the best stories.   Maybe it's the exercise but we seem to always happen upon the most fantastic places to eat.

And it's a turtle ride to boot.

It's with great sadness that I let you all know that Chuck Foley died today at the age of 82.  Mr. Foley invented one of the greatest games in American history....TWISTER!  Thanks Chuck for the memories....

Now I know this not to be a "fishing" story, because my speedometer was showing 48 mph when he blew past me. I came to my senses and squeezed harder on those brakes. But the Cannonball, nothing was going to stop him from setting a Ford Branch record.

General Purpose GPS for Android

After searching many GPS app's suitable for use on an Android phone, I have found one that has voice commands and can replace a car GPS and accepts GPX tracks and can replace a hand-held bike unit.  Its called OsmAnd and can be downloaded from Google store.

I have used OsmAnd with my Samsung Galaxy S4 as a substitute for my car Garmin. The maps are better and easier to read.  It has its own maps and does not rely on Google Maps as almost every other phone GPS does.  This means longer battery life. The voice commands are nicer.  The lady in my phone is polite and not as rude as Jill.  The 5-inch screen, larger than the iPhone, makes it quite suitable for this use. 

I have also used it to replace my hand-held bike GPS.  I have created instructions for use with RideWithGPS.  Click here.

Thanks to all who participated, especially Mike and Sherry Knake, the ride coordinators .  Harry and Dee Parrish along with J.R. Woodall, added freshness to the old familiar crowd. Turtles and Rabbits co-existed in harmony.

Lite Riders 

If you're not a rabbit and still want to enjoy some quality time with your friends on a bike, Tuesday nite is your nite.  We ride about an 11 to 14 avg pace.  That's a big spread so we may break up into a couple sub-groups or just do a little waiting for each other at the top of hills and stop signs.  We don't drop anyone or leave them to fend for themselves, so come join our little group.

We ride the same route as is posted for the Tuesday riders, but start at an earlier time to adjust for our slower speed.  (5:30 start time from Sam's Sportsbar)

A few pics from a great trip in Lexington.....

Great Time in Lexington

      Thanks to Mike and Sherry who put on a great weekend in Lexington.  The long riders did their 74-mile ride and the Turtles did their 54-mile ride (with obligatory spotting of six turtles) with no incidents.  We had great parties at dinner, great routes, and few of us even got to spend some time in the home of the past mayor of Lexington, H. Foster Pettit and his gracious wife.  These over-night tours are the epitome of the comradery that makes the Fogbees special and "away events" not to be missed.
      JR took thousands of pictures, well maybe just a few hundred while muttering, "These are for Janice."  We also suspect that Phil kept even pace with JR.  He was true to Turtle Ride form, stopping frequently to capture images along our great route.  They better share.
      The hotel selection could not have been better.  We were right in the middle of a hopin' and partying Lexington with almost everything within walking distance.  Thanks again MIke and Sherry. Ya dun gud.

If these are bad, please blame Renee.  ( I am certain they are golden)

Take I 65 north then at exit 94 take Bluegrass parkway. That dead ends in Lexington. You'll turn right off of the Bluegrass. (Clearly marked at mile marker 71). Stay on this road. It will take you straight downtown onto Maxwell St. Turn left into Broadway. Hyatt will be the next block at the intersection of High street and Broadway.

Wednesday Mountain Biking

A couple of people expressed interest in joining me for trails at Lock 4 today.

We will meet at the silo parking lot ("you are here" on the map) at 6PM today (Wednesday) if anyone else wants to join the action. From HWY 31 in Gallatin proceed down Lock 4 road until you cross the lake and see the silo next to the woods.

Of course this ride cancels if trails are wet.

Wednesday mountain biking occurs weekly until the clocks set back in the fall.

I tend to ride all trails but for those who need to avoid the black trails I can point out the short cuts.

BBQ Ride (Addendum)

I hate to split up the group so much, but there are a number of riders who want to do the whole 50 mile route but just can't keep the pace of a rabbit.  

We've decided a good start time will be 0730, which should enable us to get back and share in the BBQ festivities with the rest of the Fogbees.  

If you're a lite rider and want to join us, please be at Head's BBQ, ready to ride at 0730.  All the other details are exactly the same as Christy's original post.  

The temperatures tomorrow will make for a fabulous day of riding.  :-)

BBQ Ride June 8

Our annual BBQ ride is almost here. The fried pies have been requested, but looks like we'll skip the hot weather this year (100 degrees was pushing it even for me). I did tweak the short ride to take out the worst PUC.  We are turtle friendly in this part of the world, and I suspect our littlest turtle will be riding. As usual, the long ride will start at 8:00 and the short ride at 8:30 to allow us to finish a bit closer to the same time. A few slower but long riders sound like they are starting earlier, so check in with that group if you are interested.

BBQ Long Route - Store stop at mile 37.4 - There are a couple detour options if you're in need.

Head's BBQ, 1055 Doris Winters Rd, Cedar Hill, TN 37032, (615) 566-5843 - Quite a few folks hung around outside last year so it might be a good idea to bring folding chairs to supplement the picnic tables. Remember to park along the fence since we will be there awhile.

Excusable Homicide?

Dan Ford was drunk and speeding and killing. Kate Richardson died July 12, 2011 in Cocke County, Tennessee because of the choices made by Dan Ford. He pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and will serve a grand total of two days in jail for  DUI but not for committing vehicular homicide which can carry a maximum sentence of six years. Ford is a former chair of the Cocke County Republican Party and a failed politician. Shortly after the accident his attorney attempted to blame the victim for riding her bicycle down a dark highway. Cystic Fibrosis

      Although the Fogbees are not actively participating in the organization of the Cycle for Life, we received the following note.  I am passing it along because of past interest of members

 Hi!  I started cycling this year and checked out your website on the recommendation of some of my fellow HEAT members.  I found out that the CFF had a Cycle for Life event from your website.  I had done Great Strides before, but was extremely excited to see they had this.

My 10 year old niece has Cystic Fibrosis so it is very near and dear to me.  I decided to create a team this year - Biking for Brooke.  I saw from an email from CFF that you guys have a team again this year.  I can't wait!
