Eastside Bicycle Club to Hear From Local Bike Advocates

Toks Omishakin, Director of Healthy Living for Mayor Karl Dean will speak to the Eastside Bicycle Club, September 28 at 7 pm. The meeting will be held at Eastside Cycles, 103 South 11th Street (Five Points).

Omishakin will be joined by Thomas F. "Freddie" O'Connell, Chairman of the Board of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Pat Clements, President of Bike Walk Tennessee and Leslie Meehan, Senior Planner with the Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The four will speak on efforts to make the Nashville area more bike and pedestrian friendly and explain what bikers and advocates can do to assist these efforts. The speakers will address issues such as the current status of the Strategic Plan for Sidewalks and Bikeways, utilization of Greenways and bicycle lanes, the city's proposed bike share program and current efforts to fund and expand infrastructure for biking and walking. They will take questions from the audience at the informal meeting.

Omishakin is a former bicycle planner for Metro Public Works and is the Mayor's liaison with the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

O'Connell is a regular bus rider and advocate of public transportation and serves on the Board of Directors of Walk/Bike Nashville and the Mayor's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

Meehan is responsible for Bicycle & Pedestrian Planning and coordination of the Safe Routes to School Program.

Clements is President of Bike Walk Tennessee the first statewide advocacy group for cycling and walking and is Advocacy Chair for the Harpeth Bicycle Club.
