Thanks to all who participated, especially Mike and Sherry Knake, the ride coordinators .  Harry and Dee Parrish along with J.R. Woodall, added freshness to the old familiar crowd. Turtles and Rabbits co-existed in harmony.

Lite Riders 

If you're not a rabbit and still want to enjoy some quality time with your friends on a bike, Tuesday nite is your nite.  We ride about an 11 to 14 avg pace.  That's a big spread so we may break up into a couple sub-groups or just do a little waiting for each other at the top of hills and stop signs.  We don't drop anyone or leave them to fend for themselves, so come join our little group.

We ride the same route as is posted for the Tuesday riders, but start at an earlier time to adjust for our slower speed.  (5:30 start time from Sam's Sportsbar)

Great Time in Lexington

      Thanks to Mike and Sherry who put on a great weekend in Lexington.  The long riders did their 74-mile ride and the Turtles did their 54-mile ride (with obligatory spotting of six turtles) with no incidents.  We had great parties at dinner, great routes, and few of us even got to spend some time in the home of the past mayor of Lexington, H. Foster Pettit and his gracious wife.  These over-night tours are the epitome of the comradery that makes the Fogbees special and "away events" not to be missed.
      JR took thousands of pictures, well maybe just a few hundred while muttering, "These are for Janice."  We also suspect that Phil kept even pace with JR.  He was true to Turtle Ride form, stopping frequently to capture images along our great route.  They better share.
      The hotel selection could not have been better.  We were right in the middle of a hopin' and partying Lexington with almost everything within walking distance.  Thanks again MIke and Sherry. Ya dun gud.

Take I 65 north then at exit 94 take Bluegrass parkway. That dead ends in Lexington. You'll turn right off of the Bluegrass. (Clearly marked at mile marker 71). Stay on this road. It will take you straight downtown onto Maxwell St. Turn left into Broadway. Hyatt will be the next block at the intersection of High street and Broadway.

Wednesday Mountain Biking

A couple of people expressed interest in joining me for trails at Lock 4 today.

We will meet at the silo parking lot ("you are here" on the map) at 6PM today (Wednesday) if anyone else wants to join the action. From HWY 31 in Gallatin proceed down Lock 4 road until you cross the lake and see the silo next to the woods.

Of course this ride cancels if trails are wet.

Wednesday mountain biking occurs weekly until the clocks set back in the fall.

I tend to ride all trails but for those who need to avoid the black trails I can point out the short cuts.

BBQ Ride (Addendum)

I hate to split up the group so much, but there are a number of riders who want to do the whole 50 mile route but just can't keep the pace of a rabbit.  

We've decided a good start time will be 0730, which should enable us to get back and share in the BBQ festivities with the rest of the Fogbees.  

If you're a lite rider and want to join us, please be at Head's BBQ, ready to ride at 0730.  All the other details are exactly the same as Christy's original post.  

The temperatures tomorrow will make for a fabulous day of riding.  :-)

BBQ Ride June 8

Our annual BBQ ride is almost here. The fried pies have been requested, but looks like we'll skip the hot weather this year (100 degrees was pushing it even for me). I did tweak the short ride to take out the worst PUC.  We are turtle friendly in this part of the world, and I suspect our littlest turtle will be riding. As usual, the long ride will start at 8:00 and the short ride at 8:30 to allow us to finish a bit closer to the same time. A few slower but long riders sound like they are starting earlier, so check in with that group if you are interested.

BBQ Long Route - Store stop at mile 37.4 - There are a couple detour options if you're in need.

Head's BBQ, 1055 Doris Winters Rd, Cedar Hill, TN 37032, (615) 566-5843 - Quite a few folks hung around outside last year so it might be a good idea to bring folding chairs to supplement the picnic tables. Remember to park along the fence since we will be there awhile.

Excusable Homicide?

Dan Ford was drunk and speeding and killing. Kate Richardson died July 12, 2011 in Cocke County, Tennessee because of the choices made by Dan Ford. He pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and will serve a grand total of two days in jail for  DUI but not for committing vehicular homicide which can carry a maximum sentence of six years. Ford is a former chair of the Cocke County Republican Party and a failed politician. Shortly after the accident his attorney attempted to blame the victim for riding her bicycle down a dark highway.       Although the Fogbees are not actively participating in the organization of the Cycle for Life, we received the following note.  I am passing it along because of past interest of members

 Hi!  I started cycling this year and checked out your website on the recommendation of some of my fellow HEAT members.  I found out that the CFF had a Cycle for Life event from your website.  I had done Great Strides before, but was extremely excited to see they had this.

My 10 year old niece has Cystic Fibrosis so it is very near and dear to me.  I decided to create a team this year - Biking for Brooke.  I saw from an email from CFF that you guys have a team again this year.  I can't wait!

The Survey

      It's been a week since we mailed out the survey.  70% of you have opened it and 26% has completed it.  What's exciting is nearly everyone wants the Newsletter to continue and over 50% who responded wish to contribute to it.  However, we will be modifying it to match the great suggestions that were shared.
      If you haven't shared your ideas yet, it is not too late.  I am not going to rap it up until we head out for the HORSEY 100, where I will distribute the preliminary results for discussion before sending out them and your recommendations to everyone who completed the survey.
     We have updated the webpage for the HORSEY and are promising a Turtle-Horse version on Saturday for those who may have worried about the Fogbee stallions galloping off over the hill. Even if you haven't made your reservation yet, I suspect the Hyatt will still welcome you.
     So please HELP with those surveys, make plans to go to the Horsey, and don't forget the upcoming BarBQ ride.

Cedars of Lebanon Triathlon Results - 2 FOGBEES Podium

There were 6 FOGBEES that participated in the Cedars of Lebanon Triathlon.  Jason Sexton placed first in his age group 25 -29 and finished 6th overall.  Congrats to Jason.  Marsha Depew finished second in her age group, Congrats to Marsha now a two time winner.  All this being said out of the 6 FOGBEES Doug Depew finished second among our group.  Times as follows:

PLEASE take time to complete the brief survey.  If you do, we'll share the results with you (participants only get to see the answers). We don't want to waste time on activities that members do not find have value.  So PLEASE do the survey!
      Also, MAY 20'th is the deadline on reserving you room at the Horsey 100.  These away trips are great fun, a way to get your significant other involved, and a way to broaden your biking experience beyond Shun Pike.

Call for Volunteers - Kids' Tri

Many of you helped me out at last year's Nashville Kid's Triathlon by wearing your Fogbee bike jerseys and riding the bike course to help keep our athlete's safe and moving.

Well it's that time again, and I'd LOVE to have the Fogbee's on the bike course yet again!

I am looking for 10-12 Fogbee's to help staff the Bike Course during the Nashville Kid's Triathlon, Sunday, May 19th, 7:00am-Noon at Centennial Park. I prefer to place only experienced cyclists on the bike course to help keep our young athlete's safe and moving. So if you're in town May 19th, get your ride in on Saturday or Sunday after the Kid's Tri and please join me at Centennial Park to help encourage the next generation of healthy active kids!

Bicyclist Killed on 3S3M Bike Event

      Accidents on the Three State Three Mountain ride are nothing new.  It's a very popular event in Chattanooga that many veteran bicyclists avoid, because with the fast downhills and high percentage of newbees, it can easily get out of control.
      This year a bicyclist lost control on a downhill, crossed lanes, and plowed into oncoming motor traffic.  Click here to read about it.  There is a caution worth noting.
      When rim-based bike brakes get wet they don't work.  Most veteran bikers use extreme caution in those conditions, slowing it down, and pumping the brakes repeatedly to dry them as much as possible.  It is also good to check those brakes and replace them anytime they have worn to less than half their original thickness.  Brake pads are cheap and easily replaced even by the most multi-thumbed mechanic AND they're a lot less expensive than a day in the emergency room.

      Since we won't be riding in the rain this weekend, everyone can take this opportunity to check out the membership list.  Instructions on how to retrieve it are shown in the newsletters.
      Once a year I update the list based a record of who opens the Newsletter.  Those not opening the newsletter (don't need to read it) get purged.  I have sent the 18 people whom I removed this month a separate email notice just in case their SPAM blocker has not been kind.
      As you examine the latest update (on worksheet May_3_2013), look for people we may have removed unintentionally.  Contact them and have them send us a note at FOGBEE@gmail.com.
      Also, send a note, if you are unable to post/comment on the blog, and want to.  You must be on the membership list to be able to post/comment.

Bicycle Friendly Ranking

      The 2013 Bicycle Friendly State rankings were issued today by the League of American Bicyclist.  Tennessee jumped again from 27'th in 2012 to 17'th in 2013.  We have seen a continually increase since the formation of Bike Walk Tennessee in 2009 when Tennessee received a 43'rd rank.  At that time Chattanooga was the only bicycle friendly city and Memphis was identified as one of the three worst cities in America for bicycling.  Tennessee can now claim Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Nashville as bike friendly cities and Memphis received an honorable mention in the city awards. The bicycle advocacy work in these four cities is remarkable.
      In 2012 Tennessee's first Bicycle Summit was held in Chattanooga.  This year the Summit is being held in Memphis.  Next year, Nashville will hold the Summit.
      The FOGBEES have played a significant role in this progress.  Members of our club work with TDOT, the Nashville MPO, Adventure Cycling Association, the League of American Bicyclists, the Alliance for Bicycling and Walking, and the Safe Routes to School Network to help advance benefits.  Two out of the three charter signing members of Bike Walk Tennessee were FOGBEES. At this time both Bruce Day and David Shumaker continue providing leadership to Bike Walk Tennessee.  If you wish to contribute to this effort, please contact Bruce Day.

SUMMARY of RAT2013

On April 21st to the 27'th eight bicyclists planned to ride 320 miles from Hendersonville, TN to Damascus, VA.  Seven were members of the FOGBEE Cycling Club.  Of the six that actual did the trip, two were 70, two were mid-60, and two were late-50 years young.  The ride was supported by a van that tracked the bicyclists and met them at predetermined stops.  This ride was on the "bucket list" of the four eldest pedalers.  The adventure more than exceeded everyone's expectations.  Documented with plans, maps, journal, and photos on the website http://RAT2013.blogspot.com/ it is packaged for future trips.
