Hi All, just wanted to check on something. I'm leaving on vacation next week and wanting to bring a couple of bikes with us. Does anyone have a 4 bike - bike rack I could borrow for the week? It would need to be the type that could slide into my trailer hitch. Trying to haul 3 road bikes and 1 mountain bike. Thanks for any help/info I could get.
You can contact me by email: jimmyr79@gmail.com
thanks everyone.

In Case of Emergency
We have added a new page to the blog ICE that I hope everyone who rides with the FOGBEES takes time to study. A couple of years ago, Demetrius Ritt provided us with an exceptional evening seminar on what to do in case a bicyclist gets injured. Unfortunately, the attendance wasn't what we hoped. So instead of repeating this seminar, I have placed the critical considerations which he and his associate EMTs taught us, after I reviewed them with our medical members.
After every serious accident, I have observed the following actions:
After every serious accident, I have observed the following actions:
- The injured bicyclist almost always dismisses the seriousness of his or her situation
- There is massive confusion at the time of the accident. The accident traumatizes all.
- Memories can't be trusted and erroneous statements follow.

SAFE Group Riding
I know you all know this stuff, but it is always useful to review SAFE GROUP RIDING practices at the beginning of a new season, so you can respectfully instruct new members or others new to group riding. With the recent accident, everyone has gotten a little nervous about riding with a group (including me). Many of the accidents I have seen have involved another bicyclist. That is more common than a bicyclist with a motorist.
I have added this report provided by the League of American Bicyclist to our Bike Safety page. Please take time to study it.

What's Happening in Hendersonville
We have posted a couple of email reports that the Hendersonville Bike/Ped Committee has received from Fred Rogers, Director of Planning. Please see the Committee blog at http://bikinhville.blogspot.com/ . As you will be able to see, A LOT is happening to expand the City's Greenway Trail network and connect it to Lower Station Camp Greenway Trails.
The North-Central Bike/Ped Plan to which Fred refers in his note is a comprehensive bikeway and greenway trail plan that the Committee submitted to the City on February 29'th.

Bicycle Injuries
As the new season begins, we already have too many injuries. On recent rides I have watch FOGBEES casually violate traffic laws. Some of them could have led to serious collisions with motorists. So I would like to remind everyone to re-acquaint themselves with bike law. We have them on this blog. Try
http://fogbees.blogspot.com/p/bike-safety.html and http://fogbees.blogspot.com/p/bike-law.html
Under Tennessee Law bicycles are vehicles and have all the rights and responsibilities of other vehicles to the road. We seem to have gotten the first part of this law down, but frequently struggle with the last part. I'll make it easy. If you wouldn't drive your car in a certain manner then don't drive your bike in that manner.
When you approach a traffic control sign or signal, such as a red light, automatically assume other FOGBEES are going to abide by it and don't plan to violate it.
The other failure I see most often is improper lane positioning. It is against the law to pass another vehicle on the right. Even worse it is against the law and against common sense to pass a car waiting at an intersection on the left side and then turn in front of them to go to the right. Lastly, if you plan to turn left, adopt the proper position on the road as every other vehicle is expected to do.
If you see someone on a FOGBEE activity riding in an unsafe manner or violating the law, courteously TELL THEM about it. It may save them, another FOGBEE, or you from injury.

Update on Kim
With a rough start to the 2016 riding season we've already had a few mishaps. Kim is home with broken pelvis bones but fortunately they are not weight bearing so no surgery is required. She can stand without any pain but walking is very painful and she must use a walker. She will be home bound for two weeks but the prognosis is good. Thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be much appreciated. We all hope for a full and successful recovery and look forward to having Kim back on the bike soon.
Also Brian was taken out by a dog Saturday on West Hester, no real injuries but we all know dogs on the road are a real concern.
With the winter of course comes pot holes and missing pavement, lets all be mindful of each other, call out slowing, broken pavement, dogs, debris and any other concerns on the roads, be vocal. Please visit the Bike Safety section on the blog for a refresher and reminder.
Stay safe out there!

Update and Request re: Bill Against Bike/Ped Funding
HB1650--SB1716 is on the Transportation Sub-Committee's agenda this Wednesday, 2/17/16. As pointed out by coastdownhills on his post, Another Anti Bicycle Bill, this bill would prohibit gas tax revenue from funding non-vehicular facilities. You can also find more information (and sign a petition stating support for funding bike/ped projects) at Walk Bike Nashville's website.
Fogbees, please consider the impact of this bill and letting your state legislators know how you feel, especially now if you're represented by one of these Transportation Sub-Committee Members reviewing the bill this Wednesday:

1. What you should know: Some candidates are finding little support inside Hendersonville. They are being forced to raise money from sources outside our City.
2. What you can do to help: Sign this petition about campaign contributions and encourage your friends to sign it.

Natchez Trace Parkway Ride May 22-30, 2016
Mary Hinton who some of you might remember from the inaugural USBR 23 ride is planning an eight day ride of the entire Natchez Trace Parkway this Spring. It's still in early planning phase. She plans to have van support and stay in B&B's. Anyone interested can post here and I'l put you in contact with her.

Another anti bicycle bill
Tennessee legislature is back in session. A bill has been introduced to prohibit gas tax money from being used for any bicycle or pedestrian infrastructure. Bike Walk Tennessee is trying to get this killed in committee. Representative Terri Lynn Weaver is a very crucial member representing the 40th TN congressional district. She is Chair of the Transportation subcommittee. This will come up for a vote next Wednesday. If any of you know her or even reside in her district, please post or email me at bruceeday at gmail dot com. Politicians pay much more attention to their constituents.

I have purchased new ROL rims and have a Ultegra 11x28 cassette on the way. Does anyone have a lock ring tool that I can use late next week to put the gears on the new rim? Leave me a message with contact number if I can borrow this tool to put this together.

Membership Maintenance - Some say, "Goodbye?"
1/2/16 UPDATE: I have sent an email notice to people who have not responded to this earlier post. I will be removing those listed on this post on January 15, 2016
Original Posting: 11/5/15, followup 12/6/15
As you all know we use the response to our email to determine who wish to continue to be on our membership list. I have compiled a list of those whom MailChimp says are non-responsive. It could be for a couple of reasons:
1) We have the wrong email address -- Please send a note to FOGBEES@gmail.com
2) They opened the message in TEXT ONLY mode -- Please send a note to FOGBEES@gmail.com
3) The Newsletter ended up in their SPAM folder -- Please send a note to FOGBEES@gmail.com
4) They haven't open their email in a week -- We'll wait another month
5) They are no longer interested -- we'll remove them in January
If you know any of the following and know they don't want to be removed, please contact them to either open the Newsletter or send us a note at FOGBEES.com.
Thanks for everyone's help to clear up our membership listing I will remove the following people from our Membership Lists in the first week of January.

Much thanks
To the FOGBees...I retired in Jan 2015 and one of my retirement goals was to get back into biking. I picked White House because I felt it was a great small town that would provide a lot of biking opportunities. Thanks to the generosity of the members of this group I am farther along than I could have imagined after riding for only 7 months. One particular member I owe a great deal is Jerry Dunaway. He let me use one of his bikes (for months) after moving into White House and as they say "I was hooked". He didn't know me at that time but that didn't stop him from being a great neighbor. Thanks to all the FOGBees for helping me get into a sport I hope to do for a long time. Merry Christmas to the FOGBees and their families.

Thanks to all of you who rode in the Christmas Lights Ride and to all who donated toys for our Santa Cop Charity. The HPD was thrilled with the donations. This will go a long way to give some kids in Hendersonville who are less fortunate a good Christmas. There were over 60 toys for kids of all ages. Here is a picture of the delivery of toys from the FOGBEES.
Thanks for your generosity!

Christmas Lights Ride Dec 12th 2015
If you are not familiar with this ride, it is an opportunity to decorate and light up your bicycle with Holiday lights and ride some of the streets of Hendersonville spreading some holiday cheer. Everyone who sees us seems amazed at the spectacle!! This ride is really a bicycle parade. We have arranged a police escort and the tentative route is less than 10 miles which opens it up for a family activity.
Now is a good time to plan your bike décor and if needed purchase any battery powered lighting that you may need. In the past we have found lighting at Wal-Mart, Walgreens and some at Lowes and Home Depot.
I am meeting with the Hendersonville police department after Thanksgiving to finalize the route. They would like to have a participant count, so I am requesting that you post here, or email me at Bikenwalk@gmail.com with your commitment, and headcount. I will be in contact with all participants via the blog and email with final route and ride arrangements.
Our Charity this year is Hendersonville Police Department SANTA COP. Please consider purchasing an unwrapped Toy or Toys for a child 0 to 12 years old. Deliver your toy to Gary Williams office at 145 Maple Row Blvd. on or Before December 14.

Virginia Creeper Petition
FYI, it seems a developer with deep
pockets is seeking a zoning change so he can build a huge commercial
development next to the Virginia Creeper railtrail. A group of trail fans
is trying to get the Abingdon zoning board to deny the request. Their
information website is:
Smack on the "Petition"
button near the upper left. This will bring up a description of the
proposed project, and a place to enter your comments (if you want to comment)
and a button to "sign" the petition.
I have already signed the petition (once at Super8 Motel) and again
online, and added my comment as a member of the Fogbee Cycle Club of
Hendersonville/Nashville, TN.
Happy T'day!

Christmas Lights Ride
I have loaded a preliminary date of December 12'th for the Christmas Lights Ride because it corresponds to the St Nicholas Ball at Blue Grass Country Club. We will need someone to chair the event. Bob Glutting who has done the job in the past is not doing it this year. Gary is still on for being Santa. I did not participate in the ride last year, but have heard several people suggest a serious "relook" at scope, routes, and organization. Time to get some fresh ideas and leadership. Comments? Suggestions? Volunteers?
