FOGBEE Archives

In 2013, I started writing a monthly column about bicycles. Initially, the Indian Lake Peninsula Living editor thought I worked for Bikers Choice. I didn't and never included a byline.

Initially, the editor asked for a couple of paragraphs and photos every month. I ran out of ideas after about a year and Bikers Choice stopped paying its advertisement. Then the editor said, "Write stories about FOGBEES and use my byline."

I found about six years of your activities and photos to share. I did include a few non-bike stories that others requested. But, in mid-2020 COVID changed a lot. The magazine terminated and I was no longer able to ride with the club. I ran out of stories to tell.

My wife kept a copy of most of the magazines. Before I started to throw them to the trashcan, I made a copy of most of these articles and lots of FOGBEE activities and photos. I thought many of you would be interested in seeing some of these old times. Here is a list with hyperlinks that you can click to see each article.

Personal eBike Story

Making Personal Stories for eBikes

FROM CAREY:

Thanks to Ben and Tom for the stories. I’m convinced we need to make this as personal as possible since talking to people about class 1 and class 2 makes their eyes glaze over.

Nashville Greenways Commission

The following highlights to Carey's report are provided by T. Evans. As a owner of an ebike he thinks both the Nashville and TDOT regulations are misguided and lack knowledge of this new technology. He will offer position statement in the next several months. He supports Carey's attempt to educate regulators.

Winter Workouts

Hi All. I just wanted to check and see if anyone has found a winter strength, condition & endurance workout program that they like and use? If it comes in an app would be perfect. I'm trying to stay off the couch this winter and I'm looking for a workout routine.  TIA for any help you can offer. 🏋 🏋 🚴 🚴

Cities for Bikes

I have biked in the Netherlands, Longueuil, and Montreal. The difference is dramatic as People For Bikes listed the best Cities for Bikes. American towns don’t have to match Copenhagen. They might want to start with Memphis.

Nashville eBikes

Are any of your people in Davidson County?  The parks department has their e-bike survey on line and they only want residents to fill it out.  One thing we’ve found out is that  every comparably sized city in the US allows e-bikes.  Austin, Denver, Seattle, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Indianapolis, etc. etc.

https://fogebike.blogspot.com/2021/11/nashville-e-bike-survey.html

They didn’t include the important information that class 1 and 2 ebikes are legal and have been for five years.  Of course this is all about instituing a ban or they wouldn’t bother with this crap.

Ole Rusty's Last Ride

Last week Ole Rusty's transmission would barely propel him in forward so he got backed up in a convenient position for towing. He took his last ride yesterday to wherever old vans go.

Jeff Kovalski

I have been contacted by Jeff Kovalski’s spouse, he passed away unexpected in July. Jeff rode with the Fogbees a few times and she wants to make his cycling gear available to others but has no idea of the value. I am going to take a look at what she has on Tuesday and will take pictures of the gear, get sizes, etc. to share with the Fogbees. I don’t remember Jeff but hopefully some of you will.

Opportunity to pick up some great bike clothes and help out Jeff Kovalski’s widow. Jeff rode a few times with the Fogbees last year but passed away unexpectedly in July of 2021 from a heart attack. Christine Chandler is her name and she can be reached at 615-766-2292. She lives in White House and would like Jeffs cycling gear go to folks in the sport. He thought a lot of the Fogbees and this is what lead her to us. All of the clothing items are like new, size L, and for reference fit me well.

UPDATE: Hasta La Vista Baby Going Away Ride and Party For Lindsay at The Farm, June 12th

UPDATE

Lindsay, our long time favorite visitor from the north is moving back to Canada.  Something about a huge promotion-taking over the entire Canadian operation for her company. Trudeau -watch out!  (Actually I think there was an issue with her visa and they are asking her to leave.)  Either way, she is going to be missed.  She has become a part of our FOGBEE Family and a big part of the Knake/Camplin Family.    Her best friend, my grandson Ender, will surely miss her.

Phil Reports

The most insightful reports about eBikes come from long time avid bicyclists. Phil Vickery, one of the FOGBEE co-founders has been riding a bicycle for over twenty years. He like many of his comrades are finding "keeping up" has become a challenge. Gone are the days when 60 miles would have been an average Saturday afternoon ride followed by lunch and a pitcher of beer at the FOGBEE club house. In late April he purchased a Specialized VADO 5.0 SLEQ. I was looking for a candid report from him.

Test Driving Mark's New VADO

On our ride today, Mark had his future Specialized VADO 5.0 SLEQ. Both Phil and I had ordered one and were interested in a trial run. My experience with Mark's new ride was both positive and negative when comparing to my road bike. I suspect the negative aspects that I noted would evaporate with experience. Check out the FOGBEE eBike blog for the rest of the story.

Shortage of Bikes, Tires, Cleats, Chains, etc

It is getting to be that time of year when people start getting their bikes tuned up and get replacement parts.

YOU MAY WANT TO GET ON THIS NOW.  SHOPS ARE EXPECTING A VERY BUSY SPRING IN MARCH FOR TUNES UP.

BIKE PARTS ARE VERY SCARCE. Almost impossible to get Shimmano chains.  Several months on back order.  Sram chains on back order about a month.  Tires are running low.  Cleats running low,
etc.

BEST Tire Width and Pressure

The bike Nerds are at it again.  This time discussing best selection of tire width's and tire pressure. I thought others would be interested in what they have to say.

Of course we know no REAL bicyclist rides on 23mm tires any more. Few ride even on 25mm. The preferred width is 28mm and larger. Learn more here

So what do the local experts say?

LCI Seminar at Chapel Hill TN

Cycling Education and LCI Scholarships offered

Donna Dixon <donnasuedixon@hotmail.com>Mon, Jan 4, 2021 at 11:32 AM

Dear Colleague,

Registration is open for the LCI Seminar at Chapel Hill TN hosted by the Jeff Roth Cycling Foundation April 23-25, 2021. Scholarships for TN Residents available.

League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) are certified to teach the Smart Cycling curriculum developed by the League of American Bicyclists. The goals of the Smart Cycling curriculum are to:   (1) help people feel more secure riding a bike, (2) to create a mindset that bikes should be treated as a vehicle, and (3) to ensure bicyclists know how to ride safely and legally.  I feel that participation in the LCI program will benefit you personally, and be a asset for your role as a leader.

Will you find a candidate who will commit?  If you are not familiar with the League of American Bicyclists safety and instruction program you can follow these links to see why we believe it is important that we have trained and certified instructors available in TN communities. https://bikeleague.secure.force.com/lab_events?id=a0k1M00000ISMsA

The JEFF ROTH CYCLING FOUNDATION promotes cycling, through advocacy and education, as a safe and healthy form of recreation and transportation. We are increasing awareness of the Jeff Roth/Brian Brown Protection Act of 2007 and promoting a harmonious relationship between motorists and cyclists, as the number of commuting cyclists are ever increasing in our state of Tennessee and our country. See site for Scholarship information. http://www.jeffrothcyclingfoundation.org/lci_seminar.html
