FOGBEES NEED TO BE SEEN

Dear Fellow Fogbees,

I saw the peloton riding up Drakes Creek tonight. Good rear blinkies, but I encourage all of you to invest in some reflective wear. Ankle, wrist, and vest reflective wear will really make you stand out. If you get the European certified vest, it also makes a great wind vest in the fall/spring.

Remember, the only good Fogbee is a live Fogbee.

Cheeburger Cheeburger has offered to host a fundraising event for Bike MS, for two days, Tuesday October 1st and Wednesday October 2nd. On those two days Cheeburger will donate 20% of all sales of anyone who presents a flyer, or lets their server know they are there for Bike MS / Jack and Back / Jeff Gibson. That's for dining in or carry out.

As anyone who's had a Cheeburger can agree, they are delicious, and in my opinion could only be rivaled by 5 Guys. The restaurant has a 50's motif and feel, and the toppings seem endless.

So get hungry, go enjoy, and let's raise more for the MS Society. Maybe we could even ride from there Tuesday, I'll see what I can put together. The flyer is attach, you are welcome to show it to the server when you go, or just let them know why you're there.

Ride for Reading Book Drive at Bikers Choice

This week through the 5th of October, Bikers Choice, in association with Ride For Reading will be having a youth book drive at our store. If you are not aware of Ride For Reading, they are a national organization based out of Nashville that promotes literacy and healthy living through the distribution of books via bicycle to children from low-income neighborhoods. It's that time of year again. Talk of football, shorter days, and the annual Fogbee Ride to Red Boiling Springs. This ride is a Fogbee tradition. Red Boiling Springs is located just the right distance from Hendersonville with the Hartsville option to make a nice one day ride for every rider level. It goes through beautiful scenery. The leaves should be in fine color about then. The roads are generally smooth with low traffic. Dennis and Debra Emery of Armour's Hotel are great hosts. This is the most requested repeat overnight getaway among all our trips.

Each day will be about 60 miles. Ride with GPS links are below.  Hartsville is about midway so anyone wanting to do just 30 miles can make arrangements to start and/or finish there. If you plan to leave a car in Hartsville overnight, let me know so I can clear it with the local authorities. They have provided a secure place in the past but the location changes from time to time.

Only two rooms left at Armours for Red Boiling Springs Ride

Dennis Emery notified me today that their rooms are almost full for our RBS ride.  This is  awesome with the ride still six weeks away.  All is not lost if you don't get a room at the Armour's since they can host more for meals and there are two other nearby historic hotels. Tom has kindly placed all the RBS ride information including recently posted 2013 routes, the other hotels and proposed itinerary on this web page.

Call me “Woody”

               During a very trying day with my sister of moving my mom into an assisted living facility, she reminded me of some things that I had not thought of in recent years. My farther passed away at a young age and missed out on seeing most of his grandchildren and great grandchildren be born and raise their own families. He was a businessman in Portland TN and owned his own business and was very involved in the growth and management of Portland TN and was very respected by young and old. He was the Portland Fire Chief for many years and one of his dreams was to have a full time fire department in Portland. I would always hope the fire alarm would sound when I was with him because I would be able to ride to the fire. When he could no longer perform that position due to his health he ran for and was elected to several terms on the City Council. He worked hard for the people of Portland to make it a better place to live. While on the City Council he never saw a full time fire department but he did at least see a full time engineer and more modern equipment at the station.

He loved his church, his family and helping others; I remember as a young lad folks in town and at his business would call him Mr. Woody or Woody. My mother never called him Woody but I can remember folks calling my father and grandfather Woody; I believe out of love and respect. She told me there has always been a “Woody” in our family and actually I have a 90 year old cousin that goes by “Woody” and once he is gone there would be no more Woody Woodall’s.

Your my friends and FOGBEE family and only out of respect to my dad and to remember him in this life I would consider it an honor; and if you wouldn’t mind to refer to me as “Woody”….instead of JR.

Where was McGiver when I needed him?

Coming down Long Hollow at Centre Point, when something caused my fender to get tangled up in rear wheel and locked it solid. Traffic was at all four directions as I slid through the intersection, somehow managing to stay sunny side up. My tire blew out in 3 different places. I carry boots, but not that many. Swallowed my pride and called my dear spouse for a rescue ride.

It was pretty interesting in that I never smelled burning rubber from a bike before or left a long black skid mark.
In any event I am starting a new Fogbee tradition of having an incident with no injury! :-)

The Gallatin Gran Fondo is fast approaching and we have some new updates about the ride. Byron's BBQ has graciously supplied a free lunch for all the participants and the Bikers Choice is giving away a free kit of your choice to the person who can set the record on the Old Hwy 109/Scotty Parker Branch climb on Strava. USBR 23 Is On Its Way

. . This week Bruce Day and Dave Shumaker sent this note to the mayors, administrators and stakeholders in Robertson,Sumner, Davidson, Williamson, Maury, Marshall, Lincoln counties and the cities of White House, Nashville, Franklin and Lewisburg who discussed, reviewed and approved the proposed route in each of their jurisdictions.  All these communities and counties submitted letters and/or resolutions of support for the USBR route 23.

We'll Be Counting You this Tuesday

2013 Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Counts

The Nashville Area MPO conducts regional bicycle and pedestrian counts as part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project.  The next counts will be conducted on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. The count will be conducted in 35 locations throughout the MPO region [Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner (Drake's Creek Park, Station Camp Rd, downtown Gallatin), Wilson and Williamson Counties]. The Sumner County counts are conducted by FOGBEE volunteers who count for two-hour periods from 7-9am and 4-6pm.

Next Weekend...The First Fogbees Introduction to Mountain Biking Ride!

Ok, I know that riding through trees and on dirt is probably not everyones cup of tea, but next Sunday morning, barring rain, I will be leading the first ever Fogbees mountain bike ride at the brand new Hendersonville Mountain Bike Trail located behind Sam's Club on Saundersville Road. This trail is extremely beginner friendly with no rocks or roots, and some very fun whoop-de-doos. To access the trail, park at Veterans Park which you can see from Vietnam Veterans Blvd and access the greenway which runs behind Sam's Club. When you arrive at Saundersville, turn right, go across the bridge and you will see a narrow trail leading back into the woods on the left side of the road. This is the access point for the trail. I will post a start time on Thursday once I have a clearer view of the weather. If it rains between Friday and Sunday, the trail will be too wet to ride safely.

Turtle Queen Takes a Spill

3 turtles headed out for an early ride this morning.. a few miles in, the turtle queen flipped over.. luckily the other turtles were able to get her upright and she is expected to have full recovery. :) I also hear there are a few pictures... turtles never fail to get pictures. Mike will post those up shortly.

GLOVES FOUND

Sherry found a pair of Body Geometry gloves this morning outside her office that someone apparently left after the ride last night.   Let us know if you are missing a pair and we will get them to you.

GREAT JOB Bruce and Dave

Creation of USBR23 has been a labor of love for Hendersonville volunteers Bruce Day and David Shumaker of Bike/Walk Tennessee, a Nashville [sic] biking nonprofit. Day said the addition of Franklin’s support is crucial because it gives credence to the plan. Plus, he stressed how bicyclists — especially touring cyclists — love to visit Franklin with its mix of country roads and modern amenities such as stores and restaurants.

“If you’re a real rough-and-ready type of cyclist, you still have to stock up and eat,” Day said. “Having a place with a lot of conveniences before you head out to the southern part of Tennessee, where services are few and far between, is important. And it’s a charming place to stay.”

In our August TDOT meeting Jessica Wilson reported 

 US Bike Route 23

Dave Shumaker and Bruce Day of Bike Walk TN have been working closely with TDOT to designate a US Bike Route in TN.  Dave and Bruce rode the route and have met with county mayors for each jurisdiction and received letters of support.  We are waiting on one letter of support which is expected to come in next week and working with TDOT’s Mapping Division to create a detailed route map.  The deadline to submit the application to AASHTO is September 9^th.

Helmet Found

A white Mavic helmet was found tonight in the middle of Indian Lake Road by a fellow biker who was passing by in his car.  Unfortunately, by the time he was able to turn around and get back to it, it was demolished by the wheels of a passing car.  :-(

If you're reading this and you've lost a white helmet tonight, I'm so so sorry.  I only post this because if it were my helmet I'd want to know it's whereabouts and would want some kind soul to magically find me so I could get it back.

That kind soul has contacted our group in an attempt to track down an owner.  If you're missing this white helmet, please post and we can get it back to you.  Unfortunately, it won't be in "like new" condition.  

Riding CAN 93 to Jasper

I ran across a couple of friends as we drove from Roosville BC to Jasper Alberta (for more info click here).  These guys were just outside of Many Glacier Hotel.  Bicyclists were everywhere.  The jammer drivers thought they were cute with this joke, "What do bears call bicyclists?"  Submit your answer in the Comments.

Big Thanks!  Praises to the Bike Bell.

Just wanted to take a minute to give a shout out of thanks to the rabbits.  Not sure who it was, (guessing maybe Doug?), but before they raced by us they signaled by giving a bike bell a few rings and passed us with enough room so we didn't feel startled and pushed off the road.  

Honestly, when I first heard the bell, my first thought was an ice cream truck was frantically trying to get by us. lol!  It took us a couple seconds to figure out what the heck was going on, but it was a great idea.  

Often when the rabbits whiz by us unexpectedly, we are caught off guard, and some of us turtles, who are not as skilled on our bikes as others can be shaken a bit.  If you guys continue to give us a heads up before passing and a little extra passing room, we'll be sure to move as far out of your way as possible.  :-)

Joey Works the Senior Center

Many of you know Joey Holland from his Stinkin' Fish Ride which predated the FOGBEES by many years.  Check out this recent article in the Hendersonville Star News. Hendersonville Man Bikes 697 Miles in Retirement Challenge.  We also have a few retirees working on a 700-mile tour for 2014, but hardly at Joey's pace.  It's an Aussie Bob and Bruce Tour in very preliminary stages.

HELP Needed!

Bruce and I (Tom_E) assist the Nashville Regional MPO with Bike/Ped counts. (We're already signed up at other locations in H'ville for counting.) It helps us qualify for funding and assistance in dealing with local politicians.

Bicycle Needed

I was forwarded this email about a woman in need.  Being a cycling group most of us have or have had several bikes in our garage at any one time.  (And living rooms for that matter)  Surely one of us has an unused, unloved bicycle that sits around collecting dust.  It doesn't sound like she's needing a Trek Madonne.  lol!  Just a bike in good repair with a few gears to help her up the hills.

Turtles vs. Rabbits

So you know your an Ole Fogbee when....

In my never ending sentimental journey through life I remind the Old Fogbees how old we are by sadly sharing that the FABULOUS  EYDIE GORME died today at the age of 84.  I fondly remember her biggest hit in 1963 when I was just 8 years old. Everyone at school sang this song and any dance party played this hit. She was a lovely lady who sang her heart out in the 1960's, the decade of change in Music. May you rest in peace.....

Critical Mass Demo for Injured Bicyclist

 

      Nashville bicyclists are holding a Critical Mass (Saturday Aug 10'th at 3PM) in light of a recent hit-and-run that injured local bicyclist, Molly Meinbresse. We want to show support for her and her family while raising awareness of the need for drivers to respect the safety of alternative transportation users.
     We will also be demonstrating how bicyclists are responsible for sharing the road safely and respectfully. Click here for more detail.
